Miss Celestine Johnson Wins Zeta Phi Beta's Miss Ebonv Contât oy james Feeler Post Staff Writer Delta Zeta Chapter of ZeU Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. spoil sored the 1976 version ο EBONY FASHION FAIR an< concluded its annual MIS! EBONY CONTEST activitie! and awards last Monday nigh at Ovens Auditorium. A near capacity crowd "much larger than last year,' according to sorority membei Jane Reid, applauded heartilj as 10 beautiful female model: and two handsome male mo dels paraded and strutted or stage in the latest fashion creations. The sorority, headed by Ma die Simpson, Basileus. who was Mistress of Ceremonies for the Intermission presenta tions, took the opportunity to announce the winner of their annual Miss Ebony Contest. Celestine Johnson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs William John »υπ was awarded the title '^iss Ebony - 1976". The 10th grader at West Charlotte High School sold the most $10 tic kets with subscriptions to the fund-raising affair and re ceived the $100 First Prize. Carolyn McFadgion, a stu dent at East Mecklenburg High School whose guardian is Miss Joyce Monroe, won the sorority's $1,000scholarship to further her education at the college of her choice. According to sorority Tami as Jane Reid, "The sorority will award another $1,000 scholarship to another deserv ing girl as soon as the Scholor ship Committee makes a final selection." This will make the sorority's total scholarships for the year of 1976 to $2,000. The winner in the Talent Contest was Donna Ellen Byrd, recipient of a beautiful piece of luggage, daughter of Mrs. Hazeline Bynd. The 10th grader at South Mecklenburg High School performed a créa tive dance which was consi νινί eu me iiiuM uuisianamg performance by judges Hor tense Reid, Johnsie Scott Young, Virginia Massey, Ralph Gordon, and Dr. Roland Reid. During intermission activi ties Delta Zeta Chapter Basi leus Madie Simpson presented a check for $200 to NAACP State President Kelly M. Alex ander, Sr. for the organiza tion's Legal Defense Fund and a check for $200 to Timothy Cotton of Johnson C. Smith University 4or support of the United Negro College Fund. According to a sorority spokeswoman. Monday's af fair represented the organiza tion's "major project for this year." She added. "One of the principal objectives of the sorority is to promote scholar ships and local charities. Thej>cholarship fund is used to assist worthy young ladies to meet their financial obliga tions at the various schools in which they may be enrolled or plan to enroll. She added, "The National Chums presented the Legal Defense Fund of the NAACP a contribution of $2,400 during convention activities."
