Freai L-hartotte favored High Schools Expect Banner Year By James Cuthbertson Post Staff Writer . The high school basketball season is here and iClooks like another banner season for the locals —-lilt's take them one hy n«M> from the favorites on down to the “spoilers." West Charlotte won state championships in 1963 and 1966 in the old North Carolina Athletic Conference and fi nished second to Wilmington New Hanover in 1968. This could be the year of the Lions. They have talent, depth, height, good ball hand lers and good shooters. Coach Charles McCullough is opti mistic about 6’3” John Parks, 6’5” Lamonte Lindsey, 6'4” Reggie Reid, 6-2" Malcolm Pharr and Toby Alexander. On the bench will be Duane Berry, Terry Chavous, Bobby Hanes, Bobby Bass, Marty Miller and Daryall Broome Olympic with 6'4" Ondr^. Richardson in the middle should challenge West Char lotte for the top spot. The . Trojans of Coach Vernon He drick return 6'1” Jeff Nance, and 6'0" Gerald Stevenson, Ronald Cherry, Charles Ab bot and Randy Hood. Chris Rudisill, a sophomore should _..help the run-and-gum team whose weakness may be a lack of height. The Vikings of North, coa ched by Leroy Holden, have hot shots Graylon Wallace and Gerald McAfee back. They Into Hall Of Fame Ondr* Rkairaga ...Olympic star also have Wyrlt Chase, Mac Walls, and 6'3V Dwight'Le wis and could be a contender if they overcome their lack of height and bench depth. The bench consists of Gerald Carr Newton Williams, Robert Quarles and Melvin Hoover. The defending state cham pions of Coach David Price return Jerome Mobley, one of the best players in the state, Aaron Cunningham, and John Fitch. They added Vernon Stowe, TiTeg Little, Jerry Morris. Dwight Miller and Carter Sewell. Their forte is depth, quick ness and experience but they don't have mueh height. Garinger's Wildcats are very solid, 6'4" Brick Smith and Bryah Little return to join 67" senior center Frank O wCns, Johnny Witherspoon Jerome Mobley ...South's bomber and 6’5” Mike Allen to make the Cats a tall team R.C. Reynolds, a transfer from West Palm Beach, Fior da, will help the team also. Predicted for sixth spot are the East Eagles coached by • Reginald Thompson and led by everybody's all-county Mi chael Grant. Grant will be joined by Billy Barmer, Curbs Crawford and 67" Michall Mullis to give the team good shooting, good de fense and quickness. A lack of height at the forward spots may hurt the Eagles. The Harding Rams of Coach Pete Campbell... find.them selves in their lowest spot in years. They are bigger than normal, with 6’6” Lester The rell in the center position. Greg McCullough, Jimmy Crmylon Wallace •North's hot shot James, Bernard Baker. Kevin Steele, and Ronnie Lowe will lead the Rams' attack. The Patriots return Tommy Stillwell, Jay Schwamberger, Reggie Wilson, Audwin Hel ton, and Jack Planter. They will be experienced and a good shooting team hut lack height and rebounding. The small, poor shooting, slow West Mecklenburg In dians of Coach Morgan Wal ker will have to press and rely on good defense. They consist of Antoine Hoover, Gerald Wilburn. Ray Bennett, Joe Edder, Frank Carter, Joe Black, Anthony Maddox, Fred Brown, Roger Brown, Jeff Avery, Bryan Lynch, Clinton Phillip and Antoinio William son. Myers Park, rated last, lost everybody. They are quick but lack size and experi ence. Heading Coach Wayne Ayers' roster are Henry At kins, David Thomas and Ivan Diggs. Abrams Named “Coach Of The Year” By James Cuthbertson Post Staff Writer A week after football prac tice began, Rudy Abrams the head football coach of the West Charlotte High School pondered the future of his Lions. “We don’t have much depth and I don't know what it is but _West Charlotte has never had a large turnout for football like the other schools. This really hurts our program,’’ he explained. One might have passed this off as jargon but the Lions had not been to the playoffs since they joined the North Carolina High School Athletic Association in 1966. Prior to that, competing in the Western Conference of the old N.C. H.S.A.O. with Second Ward, York Road, Gastonia Highland, Ashetille Stephens Lee, High Point William Penn, Winston-Salem Carver, Wins ton-Salem Atkins, and Greens boro Dudley, they would al ways bring home some kind of marbles. ^-But integration hit and the last bastion of Black school * Triple County Baseball League Sets Meeting A meeting of the Triple County Baseball League will be held Friday, December 3, at 7 . p.m., at Bethelehem Center, 2705 Baltimore Ave nue. The main topic of discussion will be the 1977 schedule. The meeting is open to non-league teams, said Bill Cole, presi dent of the popular semi-pro circuit, Charlott^^os^^* pride in Charlotte saw num bers of talented athletes opt for private schools rather than attend West Charlotte. This year the reverse hap pened and all of a sudden Abrams found himself with a quarterback who wanted to prove he could play in a 4-A league named Scott Bridg water. Frank Carr and Perry Ca ruthers were set up as targets. Archie Mgtthews, Tommy Green, and Biilv Deavprs IT-- mr‘ . were set to anchor the line and suddenly West Charlotte found itself with a team. As a matter of fact the Lions whose only two losses were to playoff teams, East Mecklenburg and Richmond County, are the only local team left in the 4-A playoffs after a 14-7 victory over East Forsyth. For these reasons, no more, Rudy Abrams who has done an outstanding job at W«l— Charlotte is our coach of the Year for 1976, _ _ IM- ... Armstrong were inducted into the Shaw University Hall of Fame in ceremonies held in Raleigh’s Hilton Inn on Satur day night. The Rocky Mount natives were students at Shaw in the 20’s and went on to become probably the most accom piioucu ttuueies in me nistory of the school, joining Dr. James E. Lytle in the Hall of Fame. describing the accomplish ments of Dr. Wiley T. “Army” Armstrong would be akin to writing the scenario of a Hol lywood movie. "Army” was the first four-year, four-letter ath lete at Shaw, starring in foot .JgjjjbasketbalL and being an outstanding tennis player. “Army” also was an all-con- 1 ference, and an all-American athlete, drawing the admira tion of all who watched him play, and also the praise of both teammates and also op ponents. Grantland Rice said, “It wasn’t whether he won or lost, but how well he played the game." To hear such outstanding sports figures as Skink Browning, Pete Wil liams, and Cecil Flagg tell of how "Army” Armstrong in fluenced their careers was almost impossible to imagine. Dr. George Debnam related how Dr: Armstrong was his guiding force in his quest for his medical degree, and May or Bill Turnage of Rocky Mount, spoke of Dr. Arm strong, “the citizen.’’ - Check the ads, in the.
