MRS. LILLIE SHANDS BLAKELY —Surrounded by children and offsprings Mrs. Blakely Is 91 Years Old Bv James Peeler Post Staff Writer Mrs. Lillie Shands Blakely, of 2225 English Drive, was 9l-years-old last Saturday, December 11, and her 5 living children, eight grand children, 16 great grandchildren, and ■ two great great grandchildren gathered, as they do annually, to celebrate the occasion. Last Saturday’s celebration was held in the Fellowship . Hall of Zion Primitive Baptist Church on Sugar Creek Road beginning at 4:30 and lasting until 7 p.m. A spry Mrs. Blakely, native of Laurens, S.C. and widow of the late Ben Blakely, enjoyed the company of her brood and a dinner of Baked Turkey - with all the trimmings - col iara greens, string beans, yams, a variety of cakes and pies and her THREE TIERED BIRTHDAY CAKE. “She really had a good time," said her daughter, Mrs. Addie Belle Carr, who was among the 45 family members and friends attend ing the affair. Mrs. Blakely received a number of monetary gifts, a bed spread, drapries, and a white shawl, that “she is especially fond of," said Mrs. Carr. Mrs. Blakely’s children who attended this year’s Birthday celebration included: David Blakely, 72, of Laurens, S.C.; Mrs. Aimer Neville, 59, of Bradock, Pa.; Rev. Bennie Blakely, 55, of Spartanburg, iiuetide Season Merc y Hospital .tf'vani feCfileteatiQi} i oy ucuuran udies Post Staff Writer The Yuletide season cele bration at Mercy Hospital which began Thursday, De cember ninth and will contin ue through Saturday, Christ mas day, is extending an invitation to all patients and their families. This holiday celebration be gan with a program of holiday carols presented by student nurses in the Mercy Glee Club. The performance by the Glee Club was recorded on video tape so that it can be played over Mercy's in-house television channel for patients who remain in the hospital I during the Christmas holi I days. i “Jolly Old Santa" made this i appearance for the children in j Pediatrics on Sunday Decern - I ber 12, where a hand puppet f show was featured, and gifts I for each of the children was i presented. The party, being ; sponsored by the B'nai B'rith : Women of Charlotte, will be ■ held in the Pediatrics Play room at ll a.m. The teenage Candy Stripers ' at the hospital have been diligently working each Satur day since early November to complete handmade gifts for each patient which they will De presented on Christinas Eve. The Sisters of Mercy from the convent at the hospital will render special music at a candlelight Mass in the Mercy Chapel, which is scheduled for midnight Christmas Eve and employees and their families are invited to attend. Christmas day will be high lighted with a traditional Christmas dinner complete with such menu selections as Yuletide fruit punch, holiday roast turkey, snowflake pota toes and angel light rolls. Afro-American Cultural Center To Sponsor Party The Afro-American Cultural and Service Center will spon sor a Christmas party for children ages 4-12 Saturday, Dec. 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in its office on the third floor of Spirit Square, 110 E. 7th St. More information may be obtained by calling Jim Jeeter at 374-1565. S.C.; Mrs. Addie Belle Carr, 52, of Charlotte; and George F. Blakely, 50, of Trenton, N.J. Honoree Blakely has lived in Charlotte since 1934 and is a member of Zion Primitive Baptist Church, pas to red by Rev. O.J. Hatcher. She is an Honorary Deacon ess, an Honorary member of the Usher Board, and a mem ber of the Senior Circle. Mrs. Carr said, “Before her (Mrs. Blakely) eye sight fail ed she liked to read and make quilts” as hobbies. Ms. Johnson Hosts Alpha Christmas Party A delightful evening, spent in the lovely home of Mrs. Margaret Johnson provided, the highlight for the annual Christmas Party of the Alpha Alpha Chapter df Alpha Pi Chi Sorority here last Saturday night. The well-planned program, put together by the Christmas Program Committee, includ ed group singing, poems, ex pressions of Christmas, Christmas presentations and summations and evaluation. Mrs. Johnson is chairman of the program committee. She was assisted by Ms. Roberta Lyles, Ms. Clyde Johnson, Ms. Ruth Johnson and Ms. Mae Williams. Ms. Marie Adams is the organization’s educational director. Ms. Ethel Maxwell, Ms. Do retha Davis, Ms. Margaret Harris, Ms. Bessie Simpson, Ms. Lyles, Ms. Sadie Grigg, Ms.Lucielle Witherspoon and Ms. Ethel Haynes gave im pressive presentation under the theme “Symbols of Christ mas." Ms Haynes was most haliarious as "Santa Claus." Other participants on the entertaining program were Ms. Ruth Johnson and Ms. Lula Brown. “ 1 1 1 1 m. Yams can be used in soup, like mashed potatoes, mashed and then fried, or boiled or baked, cook ed with meat in stews, or cut into slices and fried. Yams are also a popular dessert. How about mashed in pies or chuck-style in cob blers? Combining yams with spices and fruits such as pine apple, oranges, and cran berries, is still another way the vegetable is often served. Arrange yams in 10 x 0-inch baking dish. Top with cran berries and nuts. Dot with marmalade. Bake at 350 de grees, 30 to 35 minutes. Sprin kle with marshmallows.
