Legisla tive Committee on Property Tax changes in registration of motor vehicles in North Caro lina patterned after Georgia and several other states to eliminate vehicles that are not taxed and long registration lines at license renewal pe riods. Wade said that a 10 month registration of the 4 million vehicles in North Carolina is needed to increase the effec tiveness of the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). The current registration is done in 45 days. Wade said that so ---— —. v >W (IHV VII UIV entire department that “it takes as long as six months to recover.” He said that stag gered registration would sell tags to one tenth of the vehi cles for ten months thus reduc ing the load. The program could begin as soon as 1978. Representative Bob Jones explained to the legislators how a system of registering vehicles at county courthouses would catch approximately 15 percent of the vehicles that are estimated to escape the county tax rolls. Jones said that coupled with staggered registration county tax collec tors who don’t discover ve hicles owned by “students and apartment dwellers" would sell the tags. To get a tag or sucuer a venicie owner would have to pay taxes be fore getting a tag. Similar legislation failed in the last session of the N.C. General Assembly. Ed Wade did not agree that coupling staggered registra tion with registration at Coun ty Courthouses would work. He said “Anytime you change how you handle 4 million of anything you are going to have trouble.” To avoid problems Wade said that staggered re gistration and county regis lOBIBaaBOIHB tration should be implemented at different times. Mecklenburg County Tax Collector J.A. Stone and se veral other collectors present were in favor of the system outlined by Jones. Stone said that in Mecklenburg County 2400 of the 260,000 vehicles registered and owned in the county were not listed with the county tax collector during fiscal year 76. He said that amounted to a loss of one million dollars or more of. revenue to the county. WGFV Initiates Drive To Collect Food Items A MOUNTAIN IN CHAR LOTTE? WGIV says that’s the plan for one of its many involvements in the Charlotte community over the Christ mas and New Year holidays. “There will be more hungry people this year than in a long time,” says the station’s pu blic affairs director Jim Black. “The bus strike, the Harris Teeter strike, inflation and high unemployment all lend themselves to making the out look very bleak for a large number of people,” Black says. “Most of the people who suffer will be from the Black community and because WGIV is a predominantly Black radio station, it is ap propriate for us to initiate some action,” he said. The action is a Mountain of Food Drive. People are beihg urged by WGIV to contribute non-perishable, preferably scanned foods to any one of mree satelite stations set up to receive and distribute food. Satelite stations are Pentecos tal Temple, 1401 Parkwood Ave., Cannon’s Cathedral, 200 Tuckaseegee Rd., and the Dal ton Village Police Station, 2204-C Carona St. The Mountain of Food drive, which began Dec. 4, will end on Dec. 15. Black says "We're going all out for that final rush. We will show the movie “Sparkle” at the Village Thea tre on Freedom Drive at 8:30 p.m. The price of admission is...canned goods. WGIV will also give away some Warner Brothers albums as Christmas gifts at the theatr^." Read the Charlotte Post Each Week.
