Post Cites Gerald McAfee - For OutstandingPerf ormance By James Cuthbertson Post Staff Writer At school he is quiet and shy. At home he operates the same way. The unique thing about him is his determination and attitude, both of which are positive. Even though he is only six feet, one inch tall, he can jump with men five and six inches taller. Norman Vincent Peale once wrote a fcjook on a posi tive attitude~and he should have entitled it, “Gerald Mc Afee, the story of success.” Opponents prepare unique defenses to stop him, but this all-county player always ma nages to get his points. McAfee, a senior at North Mecklenburg High School in Huntersville, is this week's Charlotte Post “Player of the Week.” He’s cited for his efforts in a one-point win over South Mecklenburg last week. Living in the Derita section of North Charlotte, he played basketball all summer long in the North Mecklenburg Sum mer League with his friends Graylon Wallace and Eric Lee and was often the high point man. Evidently the practice • Gerald McAfee ...Success story paid off. Gerald, who hit 21 points and pulled down 21 refunds in the 79-71 upset over South, scored 21 points in the 76-75 loss to Olympic to put the Vikings in the middle of the Southwestern 4-A conference derby race. Look for talented McAfee to repeat the honors often during the season. Other stars included Jerome Mobley, who hit 21 points in South's 83-55 win over Myers Park and 28 in the 79-71 loss to North...Tim Harris, who hit for two free throws in the last four seconds to give Olympic a 76-75 win over North and finished with 17 points for the game...Melvin Hoover, who hit 18 in the upset over South... 6’4" senior Ondra Richardson of Olympic, who hit for 23 points and 11 rebounds in a win over East 73-67 and 21 points and 16 rebounds to beat North...Jack Planter of Inde pendence, who hit 15 in a 71-63 win over West...Lamonte Lindsay of West Charlotte* who hit for 15 in a 66-52 win over Myers Park...Michael Grant of East, who hit for 26 points in a 72-69 loss to Garin ger...Johnny Witherspoon of Garinger, who hit 19 in a win over East and 23 in a 69-58 win over Harding...Kevin Steele of Harding, who hit 20 points in a 78-69 loss to West and 22 in a loss to Garinger...Anthony Maddox, who hit 17 in a win over Harding and Joe Black of West who had 26 in a 71-63 loss to Independence. Smith University Bulls did not fare well in the WBTV Classic, last week-end, the Cheerlead ers and Varsity Stuntmen left with the Cheerleaders' Trophy for outstanding performances.
