lit VI LENDING A HELPING HAND GROUP MEMBERS —Before dinning at Sl Paul Baptist Church Lending A Helping Hand Club Celebrates Third Anniversary By James Peeler Post Staff Writer Charlotte's Lending A Help ing Hand Group held its Third annual Christmas Dinner last Saturday evening in the Fel lowship Hall of St. Paul Bap tist Church on North Allen Street beginning at 6. The 16-member organiza tion, headed by President Car rie Do vns, "has served 80 people this year by going to area hospitals, rest homes, private homes, making dona tions of food to WGIV, and cleaning homes of sick peo ple," according to Mrs. Downs. She added, "We will donate money to 40 needy people this Christmas and carry fruit bas kets to homes." President Downs continued, "You can call us any time of the day or night and someone will come to the rescue." The group, organized by Mrs. Carrie Downs, Mrs. Cora Lee Pressley, Mrs. Grace Jes sup, and Mrs. Willie Mae Neal, will be three-years-old in March and Mrs. Downs says, "At least one of the 16 ladies is doing something for someone every week." The membership of The Lending A Helping Hand Group includes persons from S area churches: South Tryon Presbyterian, Ebenezer Bap tist, Mayfield Memorial Bap tist, University Park Baptist, and St. Paul Baptist; and presently consists of: Carrie Downs, President; Eva Alex ander, Vice President; Rebba Campbell, Corresponding Se cretary; Cora Lee Pressley, Secretary; Mildren Ballard, Assistant Secretary; Willie Mae Neal, Treasurer; Estelle Culp, Sick Committee Trea surer; Amy Hart, Chaplajn; Edna Dickey, Chairman of Sick Committee; Willie Mae McNeely, member of Sick Committee; Marian Poole, Chairman of Transportation Committee; Beatrice Camp bell, Treasurer of Activity Committee; Reola Thomas, Sick Committee member; E va Reid, Grace Jessup, and Mrs. Roosevelt Withers. Last Saturday's Dinner was attended by approximately 75 persons who enjoyed a home cooked buffet meal of roast beef, turkey, fried chicken, and assorted vegetables, cakes, and pies. A brief program proceeded the dinner and included the singing of Christmas carols, lead by Albert Franklin, and a prayer service conducted by Rev. A.B. Sutton, pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church. "Everybody had a good time," said a delighted Mrs. Brown, who concluded, "We will have a dinner again next year, hopefully at a place where we don't have to do so much work." December 27-31 Week After Christmas • Each residence in the city will receive two backyard garbage collections on a Τ u esday-T h ursd ay/Wednesday - F riday schedule. • Special curbside trash service will be provided this week. If you live north of Wilkinson and Independence Boulevards place your trash at the curb by 7 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 30 for collection the same day. On the southside place items at curbside by 7 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 31 for pickup the same day. • The York Road Landfill will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 27-30 and until noon on Dec. 31. The landfill will be closed New Year's Day. Tree Tips Remember, place cut Christmas trees at the curb on Jan. 3 for collection. After this date, trees will be picked up on regular Wednesday collection. Live Christmas trees caa be donated to the City for planting in a park or on public property. ' Clip and Save Interdenominational Concert To Feature Six Choirs : Six area church choirs will perform for the second annual "Interdenominational Gospel Concert for Missions" sche duled at 4 p.m., Sunday, De cember 26, at First United Presbyterian Church, 501 N. Try on. One of the groups is the J.A. Gospel Choir of Shiloh Institu tional Baptist Church. Other groups are the Young Adult Choir of First Mt. Zion Baptist - Mrs. Lonnie Miller, director; Young Adult Choir of Univer sity Park Baptist Church - Beverly Ellis, director ; Young Adult Choir of Pleasant Hill Baptist ■ Mrs. Liggett, direc tor; Young Adult Choir of McClintock United Presby terian · Linda Hoover and Clyde Potts, directors Organized in 1969, the 37 voice J.A Gospel Choir was named for the pastor of Shiloh Institutional Baptist Chureh. His first two initials, "J Α.", are used to acknowledge "his interest and an inspiration he has given the group," said a recent statement from the choir. Charlotte native Tommie L. Campbell directs the choir. He began playing at the age of ten, under the guidance of Charles McRae, said the state ment. The 1973 Garinger High School graduate attended Friendship College in Rock Hill. SC. before becoming minister of music at Shiloh. Andrew Cuthbertson is pre sident of the choir and Mrs. Ella P. Talley is advisor. Local performances include coljege campuses, political rallies, radio, the television programs "Expressions in Black" and "Quest". A recording of the choir is anticipated in July 1977, the statement said. JNew License Plate Stickers To Go On Sale " Approximately four-million license plate renewal cards will be received by motor vehicle owners this year. Cards were mailed on De cember 10 and 20. Stickers will again be used for private passenger auto mobiles. This year, stickers feature a white outline of the state on a dark -"Ved back ground. Other vehicles will receive a 1977 red on white license plate. Stickers and plates go on sale January 3, at 102 locations I throughout North Carolina. Motor Vehicle owners who do not receive their license plate renewal card by Jan. 3 should notify the Division, of Motor Vehicles. Registration Section.
