A NEW YEAR...The old year is leaving like an
old silvered haired man, with many memories
pleasant and unpleasant tucked away in his time
weary mind. The new year taking its place will
be like a new born child, fresh and innocent with
only the future to be concerned with.
With this thought in
mind many of us will
make resolutions and
promises to ourselves
that the new year will be
a better one. Unfortu
nately we can't disasso
ciate the old and new
because to us the
} change is only in the
calendar.

tien *_iuu speni an evening ai Aery s nest Home.
The time was spent caroling, passing out gifts
and creating a real seasonal atmosphere among
the aged folks.
Judging from the facial expressions of the
members of the Extraordinaires, their Christ
mas was made brighter by the visit also.
Mr. and Mrs. Earl Brown, Mr. and Mrs.
Charley Cox, Edna Johnson, Charles Foster,
Edwina Hayes, Minnie Allison, Bernadine Coles,
Doris Massey, and Robert Johnson were the
participants in this worthwhile venture. »
CHRISTMAS PARTY...Christmas night after
the excitement of a day filled with presents,
turkey, and ecstatic children, what better way to
relax and enjoy friends than at a party.
According to Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Holman,
Eddie Battle's Annual Christmas affair was
the party just for that.
Eddie Battle a speical agent for Prudential
* Life Insurance Company, and considered in
many circles as "The Insurance Man," hosted
his annual Christmas gathering at The Excelsior

surroundings. Some of them were: Mr. and
Mrs.James Dixon, Marion Davis, Mr. and Mrs.
George Rhynes, Randolph Ervin, Mr. and Mrs.
Freddy Dial, Duffie Hyatt, Mr. and Mrs. Johnny
Mobley, and Ray Gooding.
This was Battle's fourth year having it at the
Excelsior; however, if it continues to grow he
will have to move it to the Civic Center.
CLASS Ρ ARTY...Second Ward's class of 1959,
led by Jerry Richardson held their Christmas
party at Excelsior Club recently.
Their bash was held upstairs in one of the
smaller rooms. This setting enhanced the
cozyness of the party attended by Mr. and Mrs.
Archie Haywood, Maggie Brooks, Annie Mae
Rhodes, Mary Joyner, 'Mr. and Mrs. Robert
Parks, Mr. and Mrs. Orlando Carr, Cora
Howard, J.B. Henderson, Lewis Burton, Mr. and
Mrs. Curtis Bing, Mary Singleton, and Juliette
Broadway.
LES AMIES FUNCTION...The ladies of the
Les Amies Social Club consisting of Linda
Williams, Eunice Saunders, Debra Moore, Ar
metta Nelson, Debra Worthy, Veronica Thomp
> s;m, and Jennie Hill are enjoying this holiday
season very much and not for what they received
but for what they gave.
They made Christmas very happy for the
William's family; Carol, Byron, Angela, Tony,,
Larry and Antoyne by giving them clothing,
serving-ware and toys for the children.
This was one of the many non-profit events the
club has sponsored during the past year. Even
though the events were non-profit, I am sure the
ladies profited greatly.
BIG CHRISTMAS EVENT. ..The Paysour's,
Wallace and Barbara, entertained many friends
and relatives at their lovely home last weekend.
The party, with food and trimmings fit for
kings and queens, was attended by Mr. and Mrs.
George Murray and family, and Sharon Walker
of Greensboro, Craig Walker and Kelvin Sharpe
of Salisbury, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Plummer,
Gregory Plummer, and Erine Hightower of East
Orange, N.J., Hollis Paysour of Nashville,
Tenn.; Mr. and Mrs. Stephone Paysour and
Larry F. Albert of Washington, D.C., along with
Mr. and Mrs. William Smith, Mr. and Mrs.
James Wiggins, Mrs. Julia Doby, Evelyn Cloud,
Gloria Cole, Diane Clyburn, Jacqueline Goode,
Barbara Rice, Sharon McClure, William Nelson,
Lorraine Berry, Mr. and Mrs. D. Grant, Mr. and
Mrs. Calvin Harris, and Mr. and Mrs. Walter
Kennedy of Charlotte.
BROADWAY MUSICAL ...Dont forget Janu
ary 4 and 5, the Tony and Grammy Award
winning musical will be in Charlotte, at Ovens
Auditorium.
A Happy and Prosperous New Year to all of

"Thin Year" Resolution
" This is the time of year when
'people toting arôund excess
'· [Joiinds grit their teeth and
determinedly pledge to make
the New Year a "thin year."
'"Unfortunately," said Kit
Aldridfje, Area Director for
Weight Watchers in North
Carolina, "the tune has been
sung many times before , by
many people, but invariably it
ends on a discordant note.
"A pledge to lose weight is
one that is made perennially
by overweight people, but re
grettably it is the one most
often broken," Mrs. Aldridge
commented.
For 1977, though, the over
weight·. can make that "thin·
year" Vesolution stick, pro
vided they follow these "reso
lutions" recommended by the
Weight Watchers Organiza
tion:
1. During the upcoming
holiday celebrations, never
arrive at a party hungry.
Surrounded by all sorts of
"goodies", you're bound to be
trapped by temptation.
2. When the host or hostess
tells you that "you must
eat...", be polite but be firm in
saying "No" to a morsel you
know çan snowball into a
banqudt.
3. V you're invited to a
holiday celebration that fea
tures an elaborate smorgas
bord, wear white gloves. It's a
sure-fire way to avoid an hors
d'oeuvre binge, and soiled
gloves.
4. Pay no attention to the
rest of the family at the
Christmas or New Year's din
ner table. Eat only what you
really want or should have.
5. Going to the movies
during the long holiday week
ends? Walk briskly to your
seat. Do not stop at the pop
corn and candy counters.
Chew on the plot rather than
on a candy bar.
6. Keep a "slim outfit"
hanging on the closet door.
That will surely bolster your
r
determination to get rid οι
excess pounds.
7. When you weigh yourself,
put both feet on the scale.
Don't kid yourself if you are
really determined to lose
weight
8. Join a weight-control
group that will enable you to
fulfill your New Year's resolu
tion.
Mrs Aldridge admitted that
"while some of these resolu
tions may be tongue-in-cheek,
they are better thcfn gobs-of
food-in-cheek. . .food you really
don't need and which can only
shatter your dream of a thin
New Year.'
