Programs Open
For Applicants
Gov.-elect Jim Hunt this
week announced two summer
internship programs which
will provide North Carolina
college students with an op
portunity to participate in
state government.
The Institute of Government
Summer Internship Program
will place approximately 25
college students in internship
positions in state government
for 11 weeks during the sum
mer. The deadline for applica
tions to be mailed to the
Institute is Feb. 15, 1977. In
terested students should con-,
tact their college placement
offices, the Office of State
Personnel in Raleigh, or the
Institute of Government in
Chapel Hill.
The North Carolina State
Government Summer Intern*
ship Program, coordinated by
the North Carolina Internship
Office, will place approxi
mately 300 students in state
government for 12 weeks dur
ing the summer. Interested
students should contact the
North Carolina Internship Of
fice, 401 North-Wilmington St.,
Raleigh, for an application
and a list of project descrip
tions. Deadline for applica
tions for the NCIO program is
March 25, 1977.
Both of these programs give
students the opportunity, to
learn more about government
while working under the su
pervision of a full-time state
government employee. To
date, more than 10,000 college
students have participated in
the programs, in which they
have earned academic credit,
a salary, or both.

jointly by the General Assem
bly and the University's de
partment of political science,
provides that Moore will work
25 hours a week as a legisla
tive assistant (or members of
the Assembly, which convenes
Jan. 12, matriculate in two
courses in government at N.C.
State University, and attend
weekly seminars for interns.
He will receive $1,000 to be
paid in 20 weekly payments
and 12 hours of transferable
academic credit from N.C.
State's department of political
science.
Moore, the son of W.H.
Moore of 1009 Sommerset,
Flint, Mich., was selected
from a field of several hun
dred applicants from the four
year degree granting colleges
and universities across the
state.
According to Professor Wil
liams, priority was given to
juniors and seniors with
strong preparation in political
science, economics, sociology
or other social sciences and
also to those whose training
has emphasized mathematics
and statistics.
Livingstone's 1976 General
Assembly intern was Dennis
V. Proctor a 1976 graduate
and native of Syrucuse, N.Y.,
who is now a graduate politi
cal science student at Ohio
State University.
Poplar Street
Reopens To
Oneway Traffic
Poplar Street between Se
cond and Trade Streets re
opened Tuesday, December 28
as a one-way, northbound faci
lity. The section of Poplar
Street between Trade and Six
th Streets will also be convert
ed to a one-way, northbound
street. At the same time Pine
and Mint Streets between Six
th and Second Streets will be
changed to a one-way, south
bound operation to create a
new one-way pair of streets in
the Uptown area.
For a safe transition from
two-way to one-way traffic,
the northbound lanes on Mint
and Pine Streets between Se
cond and Sixth Streets and the
southbound lanes of Poplar
Street between Sixth and
Trade Streets will be tempo
rarily barricaded. Access to
all property will be maintain
ed.
After the barricades are
installed, the City's Traffic
Engineering Department will
adjust traffic signals, signs
and pavement markings to
accomodate the new one-way
operation. This work will take
approximately 10 days. Moto
rists 'are advised to observe
the DO NOT ENTER,
WRONG WAY, NO RIGHT
TURN, NO LEFT TURN and
ONE WAY signs. When all
improvements are made the
barricades will be removed
and the entire street width will
be opened to one-way traffic
between Second and Sixth
Streets.
Poplar Street was closed to
traffic in the Spring of 1976 for
construction of a connector to
Mint Street and for widening
between Second and Trade
Streets. This project is funded
with 1973 Transportation
Bonds.

and NCAA College Division II.
Price, 43, is a graduate of
Booker T. Washington High
School where he captained
football and track teams. He
earned his B.S. degree in
Physical education at Hamp
ton Institute while playing
halfback for the Priate eleven
and running the quarter-mile
in track. He received his M.A.
degree in recreation adminis
tration from New York Uni
versity. Prior to coaching at
Norfolk State, he coached high
school football at Union
