BILL JOHNSON
THINGS I'D LIKE TO SEE COME TRUE IN
'77....
The people who talk a lot and say nothing -
SHUT UP!
...Muhammad Ali retire from the fight game
and let boxing die a long overdue death...Lee
Elder win the Master's Golf Tournament and
Arnold Palmer win just one more major
title...Short skirts regain popularity.
A Black college coach who admits that he got
the devil beaten out of him rather than placing
the blame for the defeat on the referees...Pants
g* out of style and the more attractive, eye
pleasing mini-skirts return to the scene.
Minnesota beat the devil out of Oakland in
Super XI. Anyone who embarrasses the beloved
Pittsburgh Steelers as did the Raiders last
Sunday deserves a sound thrashing...A golf
course on which I can break 80, especially when
playing with photographer James Peeler and
insuranceman Charles Ramseur. Local fans give
overwhelming support to the Charlotte Orioles
and the Triple County Semipro Baseball League
this summer.
Lola Falana get a long-overdue television
series. She's as refreshing as the early morning
dew...Somebody manufacture a golf ball that
will escape water hazards.
The 100 Club pack the Park Center with their
benefit basketball game between Johnson C.
Smith and Livingstone later this month...Then
move the event to the more appealing Charlotte
Coliseum next year. The drivers of the small
cars guit scooting in front of the guys with the big
shinny wheels. A home for the aged that swings
like the Excelsior Club.
A special award for the gutty fellows who
referee football and basketball games, especial
ly those between such bitter rivals and North
Carolina Central and A&T in football and
Winston-Salem State and A&T in basketball...Or
in any little league contest.
Scoop Henderson keep sending those exciting
photos of the beautiful gals at. Fayetteville
State...Another great season tor William Cole
and his Triple County Semipro Baseball league...
Coach Charles McCullough and his West Char
lotte cagers win the North Carolina High School
Basketball Championship.
Photographer James Peeler return to the golf
course...An invitation to all the parties in
Greensboro during the week of the MEAC
Basketball Tournament. A bass that I can
outsmart...Most especially one that will not get
off the hook once I've gotten a brief look at him.
Bob Moorman receive deserved support from
the colleges and universities in the CIAA.
Dapper Joe Alston return to the sports scene.
Bob Moorman and Company overflow the
Hampton Coliseum for the annual CIAA Basket
ball Tournament...Basketball fans in the area
support both the CIAA and the MEAC Tourna
ments with capacity crowds...
Hot dog steamed in beer with sauerkraut for
sale at all athletic events. A fishing line that will
not let big ones get away...A television contract
for the CIAA Tournament's championship
game...A golf course on which I can break
80...On the front nine, that is!
Golfer Jim Black do well with his first venture
in operating a golf course...National TV sports
casters publically admit that the white quarter
b<f ksi)ave their low moments the same as the
black wgnal-callers...I somehow get the feeling
that James Harris could have helped the Rams
Sunday. Pat Haden wasn't up to par.
Scoop Henderson, Joe Foust and Cureton
Johnson continue their exceptional works as
[Sports Information Directors ...They are among
|the best in the business.
Aaron Cunningham Ν amed
Post's "Player Of Week" !
By James Cuthbertson
Post Staff Writer
Take away a superstar and
what do you do?
You find another to take his
place -right?
For an answer let's ask
Aaron Cunningham, South
Mecklenburg's versatile ath
lete.
"Without Jerome Mobley in
our' lineup, il hurts the team
tremendously," said th? 6Ί"
170 pound senior forward.
"Take away his 24 and 26
points per game and you leave
a big blank space that must be
Tilled."
For his efforts in trying to
fill the void left because of
Jerome Mobley's sprained an
kle, Cunningham is the Char
lotte Post's Basketball "Play
er of the Week."
Scoring 15 points in a 77-62
defeat to East in the first
round of the South Invitation
al, he rebounded with a better

night in the consolation
match, pumping 21 to help
South defeat West Charlotte
80-68 for third place honors
Cunningham, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Robert Cunningham of
700 Walnut Ave., has experi
enced successes before. Last
year he was the "All-County
Quarterback" and a member
of South's 1975 4-A basketball g
champions. α
Kecenuy, ne was awarded a r
football scholarship to South b
Carolina State University
At South, he is a member of - t
the Monogram Club and the η
Fellowship of Christian Ath- tl
letes. ν
In reflecting upon his most 2
thrilling moment as far as
sports is concerned, Cunning1" h
ham remembers when he was a
brought up to the Varsity in t
10th grade and threw his first
touchdown pass as South tied
Gastonia's Hunter Huss.
After his season, however
our player of the week will
hang up his basketball shoes
and concentrate on football
with the hope of "making the
pros one day."
But for the time being Aaron
thinks the "Sabres will ad
vance to the state playoffs and
successfully defend their state
championship again this
year."
Holiday Break Slows CIAA Cage Activities I
HAMPTON, VA....The upcom
ing Christmas vacation slow
ed CIAA action to a near walk
last week, but several league
members did have an oppor
tunity to show the strength of
the conference to outsiders as
the CIAA compiled a 3-1 mark
for the week against non
league foes.
Norfolk State got things roll
ing on Monday as it swept past
Rutgers (Camden), 104-93, be
hind Ray Epps' 43 points. That
figure represents the top scor
ing effort in the CIAA this
season.
Then on Saturday Hampton
Institute picked up its third
win against four losses, stopp
ing Federal City, 89-86. Mar
vin Payne led Hampton with
25 points, while Jack Duffin
added 20.
Johnson C. Smith picked up
the third win with a 95-89
conquest of Belmont Abbey.
The only team able to stop a
CIAA foe was Coppin State, -
last year's NAIA champion,
which slipped past Virginia
Union, 91-83. Virginia State,
which is unbeaten in regular
season play, bowed in an
exhibition game to the rugged
Athletes in Action squad,
88-76
In two conference games,
Shaw picked up its first CIAA
win after two losses by wallop
ing Livingstone, 91-61, and
Winston-Salem handed Virgi
nia Union its first loss of the
season, 88-84
