W oman Of Year
Mrs. Kathleen (Kat) Crosby
has been named WBT Radio’s
1976 Woman of the Year.
Cullie M. Tarleton, Vice Pre
sident and General Manager
of WBT and WBT-FM, made
the announcement today at
the annual awards luncheon
held at Carmel Country Club.
Mrs. Crosby was nominated
by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg
League of Women Voters. She
^was selected by the former
Women of the Year who serve
as sole judges for the award.
Mrs. Crosby becomes WBT’s
2fhd Woman of the Year.
An Area Superintendent for
the Charlotte-Mecklenburg
School System, Mrs. Crosby
Was recognized for her distin
guished contributions as an
educator and her special ta
lents in the field of human
relations. She was cited parti
cularly for her ability to cope
effectively with desegregation
and busing at Billingsville
School where she was Princi
pal from 1970 to 1976. Her
leadership during this difficult
time was the focus of a CBS
television documentary in
May, 1976.
Mrs. Crosbv has 20 vears
experience as a classroom
teacher. She was also an
In-Service Specialist for Early
Childhood Education in the
Charlotte-Mecklenburg
Schools from 1967 to 1970. She
has worked extensively with
Head Start programs and has
served as an education consul
tant on the university level.

leadership is extensive and

Charter Commission, the
Drug Education Board, and
the Board of Johnson C. Smith
University. jihe is also Vice
President of the United Com
munity Services Board, a
member of Dimensions of
Charlotte, and a member of
the WBT Radio Black Advi
sory Board.
Her past honors include the
1974 B’nai B’rith Women’s
Human Relations Award. In
1975, she was induced into the
Hall of NAACP Fame for
Outstanding Distinguished
Community Service and Ac
hievement.
Mrs. Crosby is a graduate of
Johnson C. Smith University.
She has an M.S. in Education
from Bank Street College in
New York. She.and her hus
band, Joseph, live on Druid
Circle in Charlotte. They are
the parents of a son and a
