Church News Briefs ~ ~ I Matthews-] I d., n.u _ _ I By uardema Dalton Post Staff Writer Newly elected officers of the Matthews-Murkland United Presbyterian Church will be installed on Sunday, January 9, during their morning wor ship service at 11 a m. Organizations of the church receiving newofficers, elected for a 3-year term, will consist of the Elders or Sessions - the governing body of the church; The Deacons - the benevolent organization; and the Trus tees. Those to be installed to serve on the Board of Elders will be: Walter J. Cuthbert son, Sam H. Boyd, and James C. Funderburke. The Deacons will receive the following new officers: Mrs. Lula Dunn, Mrs. Barbara Jones, and Mrs. n_n'—VR.vJ IT. I . PITH iwua mj. wv/w* »/****, Elihue Stitt, and John Law rence, newly elected officers of the Trustee Board, will also be installed during the ser vice. Ralph Alexander, chosen for a one year term, will be installed to serve as the Super intendent of the Sunday School Department of the church. The church has chosen Walter J. Cuthbertson as the Assis tant Superintendent of the Sunday School Department. Other major organizations receiving new officers will include the offices of: Church Treasurer - James C. Funder burk; Congregational Secre tary - Miss Margaret Davis; Assistant Secretary - Mrs. Freddie Nelson, and Church Hosteis - Mrs. Frances J. Funderburk. The Finance Committee will receive three new members: Mrs. Marie Miller, lbs. Donna Morris, and Mrs. Bertha Kirkpatrick The Vocal and Youth Choirs of the church will provide musk for the service and the Minister will deliver the Mes sage of Challenge. ZION The Sunday morning Janu ary 2 Worship Service at Gethsemane AME Zion * Church was ereatlv enhanced “by the recognition ahd parti cipation of our members, and ■'bOme of their friends who are ^attending college. The theme of this service was “The Challenge of a Christian Style of Life at College.” Student speakers for the occasion were Brenda By ers and Wanda Davis. Both of these speakers emphasized the importance of being brought up in Christian homes, remembering and fol lowing the teachings and ad vice of thier parents, being involved in church activities, and being given responsibili ties in preparation for the time that they would leave home and have to make decisions and set priorities for them selves. These attributes em able them to continue to live Christian lives in spite of the numerous challenges that be set them on the college cam pus. Elder L.C. Clark followed with a stirring message on the "Power and. Motivation of Christian Life Styles." Student participants in the morning service were: James Bennett, North Carolina State College; Cassandra Cunning ham, Spelman; Saundra As bury, Central Piedmont; Gall Dry, University of North Carolina, Charlotte; Jennifer Mcllwain, North Carolina Central; Eddie 8. Byers Jr., Johnson C. Smith; Brenda Byers, University of North Carolina, Greensboro; and Wanda Davis, University of North Carolina, Greensboro. - Other college students at tending the service were as follows. Karen M. Byers, Bar ber Scotia College; Sidney Cunningham, Western Caro lina; Stanley Cunningham, Appalacian; Gwendolyn Da vis, North Carolina Central; Debra Dry, Susan Foster, and Robin Grier, Central Pied mont; Eugene Marsh, Univer sity of North Carolina, Char lotte;-Wayne McLurkin, Uni versity of North Carolina, Chapel Hill; and Roland Ga briel, Central Piedmont. Following the service the "congregation gieeted the ho norees and their parents in the Fellowship Hall. Coordinator for this special service was Mrs. F.C. Jordan. The minister of the church is the Rev. George E. Battle Jr. MAYFIELD MEMORIAL The Day Care Center of Mayfield Memorial Baptist Church opened successfully on Monday, January 3rd. The church invites anyone who may be interested, to come out and look over the Day Care Center. The Director is contin uously accepting applications for enrollment in the Center. The fee is as follows: $20 for a single child; and $18 for each child, providing there are two or more children enrolling ftjMnUKMMrmHfomU^Ms^ field Memorial sincerely hopes that their Day Care Center proves to be an asset as well as a service to the com munity. On Sunday, January 9, Mayfield Memorial Baptist will observe what is called “Memorial Sunday.” This special service, observed an nually, is in remembrance of those members and loved ones of Mayfield whom God has called home during the past year. The Spiritual Choir of the church will furnish music for the solemn service. Mayfield Memorial Baptist Church is located at 700 Sugar Creek Road West and is pas tored by Dr. H.S. Diggs. FAITH COMMUNITY The Happy Land Singers of the Faith Community Church will present a GOSPEL JAM BOREE on January 9, at 2 -p a Several Choir* "'ll! he featured on the program, in cluding : The Black Mass Uni ted Choir - Fletcher, N.C.; the Carolina Singers - Asheville, N.C.; and Nathaniel Robinson and Singers - Asheville, N.C. The public is cordially invit ed and encouraged to join with the Faith Community Church and share in their songs of praise and worship. The Faith Community Church is located in Waxhaw, N.C. WALLS MEMORIAL The members of the Walls Memorial AME Zion Church held several "End of the Year” events last month. Mrs. Lorene Richardson was named “Mother of the Year” in a rally culminating on last December 6. Each of the participants and their fa milies worked very intensely during the rally which began in October. Those participating in the rally for Mother of the Year of Walls Memorial AME Zion Church were: Mrs. Rosa Campbell, Mrs. Della Curry, Mrs. Helen Gerald, Mrs. Ella Givens, Mrs. Eloise McCray, Miss Lydia Neal, Mrs. Jose phine Morris, Mrs. Barbara Phifer, Mrs. Lorene Richard son, Mrs. Frankie White, and Mrs. Pearl Wylie. Funds col lected, as a result of the rally, totaled more than $10,000. In addition to the rally, a concert presented by the ‘‘J.T. White Singers" was given at 6 p m. on the same date. The Annual Christmas Pro gram, sponsored by the Sun day School Department of * Walls Memorial, was given on December 20. The Day Care Center of the church present ed its Christmas Program also on that date. On December 30, 1976, 17 Senior Citizens were honored with a dinner in appreciation of their many years of service and leadership. The dinner, sponsored by the Sunday School Department of the Church, entertained guests ranging in age from 60 to 83. The Walls Memorial AME Zion Church is located at 2722 | Bancroft Street. The Rev.
