Church Neux Briefs Rev. Lemar Foster Succeeds Rev. J.M. Kennedy At Second Calvarv By Gardenia Dalton Poet Staff Writer The new Minister of the Second Calvary Baptist Church will be formally in stalled during what promises to be a very solemn and impressive ceremony and ser vice. This service, to be held on Sunday, January 23rd at 3 p.m., will officially install Rev. Lemar Foster as the Minister of Second Calvary Baptist Church, succeeding Rev — J.M. Kennedy who, though now retired, ended his 29th year of service as "Minis ter there. Rev. Lemar Foster, former Pastor of the Mt. Hebron Baptist Church in Gastonia, North Carolina, where he ser ved for eight years, was bom in Charlotte, and attended the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Public Schools. He is a 1959 graduate of York Road High School with honors as the Class Valedicto rian and with the highest academic average of any stu dent in the entire system at* that time. He was named in the Charlotte News as an "All-Star Scholar" during the same year. Graduating Cum Laude from Johnson C. Smith University in 1963, he received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Social Psychology and Reli gious Education. He has pur sued further graduate study at the following: the American Bible College in Kansas City, , Missouri, and the Urban Training Center for Christian ' Miasinne in ΓΚΙγολα iand the Ambassador College Extension in Pasadena, Cali fornia. He attended the Urban Training Center with the aid of a Ford Foundation Grant and received , a Certificate in re cognition of his completion of studies there. In 1971, he re ceived his Doctor of Divinity Degree from the Neotarian College of Philosophy in Kan sas City, Missouri. Rev. Fos ter is a member of the Sigma Rho Sigma Professional Soci ety of the Social Sciences. Rev. Lemar Foster is mar ried to the former Betty J. Letnar Foster ...Second Calvary pastor County Commissioner; Dr. C. D. Rippy, of Johnson C. Smith University; James Babb, Vice President of WBTV; and W. Thomas Ray of the Charlotte Housing Authority. Other dis tinguished guests are expec ted to be in attendance at the service. Rev. Foster accepted the call to Second Calvary, a congregation of approximate ly 400 members, in November of 1976 and has been serving as the Minister there since that time. Says Rev. Foster: "I envision many great things at Second Calvary. We have a dopted as our motto; Ά Church with a Program, a Minister with a Message.' I invite all friends, old and new, to come and share with us." A reception is to be held imme diately following the service in the Church Fellowship Hall. The event, held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, January 16, was sponsored by the Women's Home and Foreign Missionaries. Guest speaker for the occa sion was Mrs. Alice Johnson. The Young Adult Choir of Cathey Memorial, with Ms. Barbara Levatt as director, provided the music for the program. Ms. Ann Ferguson is Secretary of the Cathey Me morial Young Women's Orga nization. MAYFIELD MEMORIAL On Sunday, January 2$ at 6 p.m., the Mayfield Memorial Baptist Church will present the Johnson C. Smith Univer sity Choir in concert. This concert, to be held in the Church Sanctuary will high light the Annual Music Appre dation Week observed by the members of Mayfield. The Johnson C. Smith Uni versity Choir is composed of students drawn from all de partments of the university and has been enthusiastically received at concerts in many sections of the country. Leo Deker, former Pro gram Producer and Director of WSOC-TV, Charlotte, has made the following comment : "I think the Johnson C. Smith University Choir is one of the finest that I have heard any where. ' ' The choir will present a varied concert of secular and sacred music,, including anthems, spirituals, foïk songs, and contemporary cho ral music. Christopher W. Kemp, Pro fessor of Music and Director of the Choir, is a graduate of Hampton Institute and the University of Michigan. He has pursued additional grad uate work at several Ameri can universities and schools of music. His training abroad includes study at the Univer sity of Salzburg, Salzburg, Austria; Conservatoire d' A mericaines, Fontainebleau, France ; and the University of Ghana, Accra-Legon, Ghana, West Africa. Gwendolyn Powell, a piano student of Mrs. Charlie Butler, and Cheryl Heard, an Early Childhood major, will serve as accompanists. Mrs. Frances Walker, Instructor of Voice, will accompany soloists who are students in her voice classes. Instrument students from the classes of Marvin Davenport will also accom pany the choir. Another important event during the week included a music "workshop," held on Wednesday evening, January 19, at 7:30 p.m. The workshop will consist of all members of each of the church's five choirs and the directors and musicians, joining together with Dr. Kemp as special guest, giving pointers on voice guest, giving pointers on voice, diction, breath control and balance.
