SPOil j DCdt BY BILL JOHNSON SAY YOU SAW IT HERE Most people I know are like signposts in that they spend their lives pointing in the right direction, but never go that way themselves. It's unofficial at this writing but John D. Marshall, one-time assistant football coach at Johnson C. Smith, is about, to resign from Virginia State College and the head football coach position he has held for the past two years... HOW DOES THIS GRAB YOU?....Be energy wise in 1977, the instructions read, explaining that a good way is to keep your home temperature down to 68 by day and 60 degrees by night. The instructions further state that for ^pvery degree you dial down you could cut heating fuel costs by 3 percent...It fails to point out, however, that you also up your doctor and knenUnl Will*-· W.. — *· 1 — 1 * Λ * ..wwp.M*· wmm MJ uw icaoi IU pel tcill. Remember Ray Haskins, the trickly little guard with the Shaw Bears in the early 70's? Last week Haskins was named head basketball coach of the women's team at Hunter College in New York. He was everybody's All-CIAA in both 1971 and 1972. The Charlotte Jaycees, First Union National Bank and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte deserve an applaud for their effort in staging an invitational basketball tournament at the coliseum next December. The idea should receive great support from local cage fans. However, it occurred to me as I reviewed the press release that the joint sponsorship of the production was brought about because Davidson did not extend UNCC an invitation to participate in its annual holiday tournament. If so, wouldn't it be even more applaudable if the sponsors of the First Union Invitational Basketball Tourna ment consider the Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University as a participant in future years? The good folks over at North Carolina A&T State are hailing Ellsworth Turner as a two-sport superstar. They inform us. that the gifted quarterback is also a standout individual on the basketball courts. He also excels in the dass ruoin. » If you are wondering about A&T's dreadful 1-13 record in basketball to date, you should look no further than the classroom. It seems that coach Warren Reynolds' best athletes are having more problems with the books than with the opponents on the Aggies basketball schedule. Smooth-talking Pat Summerall and veteran Vince Scully will handle the mike duties at the $180,000 Andy Williams San Diego Open, which can be seen on WBTV, Channel 3 this Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Heavyweight boxer Ron Lyle has filed a $3.2 million lawsuit agaist Madison Square Garden Promoters. Lyle, who seeks an injunction to block the match between Ken Norton and Duane Bobick scheduled for March 2, contends he signed a binding contract with Madison Square Garden Inc. to meet Norton in February of this year. Did you note that two stunning upsets occurred on the black college basketball circuit last week? Howard got bumped by Morgan State's surpris ing Bears and lowly Hampton humiliated Nor folk State. Morgan is getting great play from Eric Evans, Anthony Young and Maurice Jennings. ' Charlie Cox, swimming coach at Johnson C. Smith, is planning a great event for Saturday, February 5. The occasion is the annual J.C. Smith invitational swimming championships, beginning at 10 a.m. SUDDEN THAWT .Who advises the Marriage Counselor when he and his old lady have a squabble? North's Hotshot Post Selects Graylon Wallace "Player Of Week" By James Cuthbertson Post Staff Writer "We alternate leading the team in scoring," said Gray Ion Wallace of North Meck lenburg High School. "We give the ball to whomever is having a hot night and let them score." The above reference "we" by this week's Charlotte Poet basketball "Player of the Week" was to teammate Ge rald McAfee, Wyatt Chase, and Melvin Hoover. "Last year Mack (McAfee) and myself led the team's scoring, but this year we have a more balanced scoring at tack and this is the reason we are contenders for the confe rence title," he added. The Vikings, coached by Leroy Holden, lost an abun dance of height when 6'5" Ervin McKinley and 6'4" Ho ward Staton graduated last year. But the depth was still there. "Last year was the first year I played on a losing team," said Wallace, whose Vikings have now won twice as mahy games as they have lost. Games remain with West Charlotte, West, Garinger and Myers Park at home and with Harding, Independence, and East on the road. "I believe we will go to the state," continued Wallace, who has his eyes set on doing undergraduate work at either Shaw or Livingstone. Last week Wallace, who is the team's sparkplug, hit for 18 points in a win over East and 12 in the one point heart breaking loss to Olympic on the Vikings home court. These Trojans-Vikings games are classics and always go down to the last second.
