ABA hays Winter Woes Require Action WASHINGTON,-To help families who are being finan cially snowed under this win ter by factory shutdowns, the loss of overtime pay and rising fuel costs, the American Ban kers Association (ABA) is offering three suggestions for immediate use. No. 1 - If you are having trouble paying your monthly bills, visit a consumer loan officer at your bank. It’s not a sign of personal failure, says the ABA, but, rather, a sign of responsibility. Alternatives include refi nancing your loan to reduce monthly payments or consoli dating your debts into a single loan. On mortgages, some bankers may let you make only alternate payments, or let you pay only the interest on your loan, until your financial situation improves. Unfortunately, for many fa milies, this could be a long time. Recent projections by the Federal Power Commis sion say the natural gas crisis may not ebb until this summer and that many factories will be idled until then. No. 2 — Flesh out a realistic budget on a monthly basis. Your budget should comprise "fixed” expenses (such as rent, taxes, insurance), "flexi ble” expenses (food, clothing, transportation) and "discre tionary” expenses (vacations, entertainment, weekend acti vities). Without a formal budget, warns the ABA, a family cannot accurately trim its expenses because there is no thing tangible to base deci sions on. No. 3 - Don’t buy or borrow against anticipated income such as overtime pay, and income tax refund or tax rebate. Anticipated increases in fuel costs will probably eat up the extra income. In some areas, fuel oil delivermen are even demanding cash on the barrel head before filling the tanks. Also, weather-related crop failures from Florida to Cali fornia will mean higher food bills. And overtime for many em ployes is already a thing of the past because of reduced store and business hours. Read the Charlotte Post Each Week.
