ChurchNeum Brief* — --•——--—-—— Mayfield Memorial Baptist Church Will Celebrate Its Eight Anniversary Sunday By Gardenia Dalton Post Staff Writer Sunday, March 27, will mark the eighth anniversary of Mayfield Memorial Mis sionary Baptist Church. May field Memorial, established and organized in 1969 was named and dedicated to the memory of Rev. P.M. May field, one who served his fellowman and God with fer vor, love, and understanding. Because of the great contribu tion Rev. Mayfield made to this city and the loving memo ry which many of the mem bers of this church still hold for him, the church whs so named with the hope that his life will continue to be an inspiration not only to its members but to the communi ty at large. The members of Mayfield Memorial Baptist have cause for humble pride and joy as they look back over the way through which they have come. The membership has grown from approximately 350 members in 1969 to well over 1100 members on roll today. In 1976, alone 114 per sons applied for membership. Also in that same year, May field held 14 Annual Celebra tions, was represented in two District Associations, one Dis trict Convention, five State Conventions and two National Conventions. Dr. Harold S. Diggs, Pastor of the Mayfield Memorial Baptist Church, has diligently and successfully led the con gregation in the up-building of Christ's Kingdom through love, understanding, and goodwill. Dr. Diggs is Presi dent of the Mt. Peace Sunday School and BTU Congress of Charlotte, N.C., Dean of the North Carolina Baptist Ushers Convention, Instructor in the Adult Division of The Pro gressive National Baptist Con gress of Christian Education, and the Recording Secretary of the Progressive National Baptist Convention of Ameri ca, Inc. Dr. Diggs, a capable leader, has been teaching in the state of North Carolina for the past 28 years. Mayfield Memorial has come a long way since its beginning in 1969, and much of the credit for its success must be given _ to Dr. Diggs for his undying devotion and unending love for td and Mayfield Memorial1 ptist Church. It is because of his interest, sacrifice, con cern and hard work that May field’s growth has continued to increase. A special service will cele brate the Anniversary of May field at 6 p.m. Featured guests of the evening will be Dr. Coleman W. Kerry, choirs, and congregation of Friend ship Baptist Church. Another highlight of the program will be the singing of the song that Mayfield considers its theme song: “,We’ve Come This Far By Faith." This will be led by Mayfield's own Spiritual Choir. Mayfield Memorial Baptist Church is affiliated with the following religious bodies: the Mount Peace Association, Dr. J.A. White - Moderator; Wo men's Auxiliary of the Mount Peace Association, Mrs. Sat terwhite - President; Mount Peace Sunday School and Bap tist Training Union Congress, Dr. H.S. Diggs - President; Mecklenburg County Mission ary Union; Mecklenburg Bap tist Association, General Bap tist State Convention of North Carolina, Dr. J.J. Johnson - President; North Carolina Baptist Ushers Convention, Lott Carey Foreign Mission ary Convention, Progressive National Baptist Convention of America, Inc.; National Council of Churches of Christ in USA, and the Baptist World Alliance. Mayfield is serving as host when the Progressive National Baptist Convention mm* w. Preston Pendergrass ...Antioch minister convenes in Charlotte in June of this year. The members of Mayfield wish to extend to everyone a warm and cordial invitation to all to come out and share with them on this occasion. Milford has been invited to preach at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church’s “Baptist Metro Night,” on Monday, April 4, at 8 p.m. Everyone is invited to come and hear the music, enjoy the fellowship, and see the build ing on 3201 Tuckaseegee Road, where Mt. Carmel Baptist Churches and by Bap tist Metro, on Saturday, May 28 at noon in Freedom Park. ANTIOCH BAPTIST The Antioch Baptist Church, pastored by Rev. Preston Pen dergrass on 232 Skyland Ave nue in Griertown, is having a “Hot Dog” fellowship on Tues day, April 19, at 7 p.m. Antioch Church will be proud to have Mary Green, sometimes called “Hot Dog Queen” and other friends from the Fellowship at Wedge wood as hosts at their Fellow ship. An unusually interesting program of ministries with children will follow the hot dog feast, along with some light _ ^entertainment. ■» - » There is no charge for the feast but the church is encou raging those who have check books to bring them. The entire offering will go to Camp Amigo, which is dependent upon voluntary contributions and by their gifts a number of couples, individuals, classes, circles and mission action committees identify with their day camp. Lamar Helms, an extremely gifted and dedicated Chris tian, is the Camp Amigo direc tor. As an English teacher at West Charlotte, he has been serving as minister of music for the Enderly Park Baptist Church, and is also a deacon in the Pritchard Memorial Bap tist Church. Rev. PLEASANT HILL BAPTIST Sunday, March 20, marked the annual observance of Men's Day at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. The 5 p.m. worship service featured the Rev. Paul W. Drummond, choirs and congregations from the Saint Paul Baptist Church as guests. The event was soul-stirring and a total suc cess. Rev. J.A. Cuthbertson is Minister of Pleasant Hill Bap tist Church located at 517 Baldwin Aye. CLINTON CHAPEL AME Rev. Martin Luther King Sr. will be the featured speaker at the 21st Annual Calendar Tea sponsored by the Birthmonth Clubs of Clinton Chapel AME Zion Church. The Tea is to be held on Sunday, March 27, at 3 p.m. at the Civic Center. This Tea will carry the theme: “A Projection Toward Century 21.” The featured Master of Ceremonies for the occasion will be Robert L. Davis, principal of J.T. Wil liams Jr. High School and President of the Black Caucus in Charlotte. Mrs. Hattie W. Clark is chairperson of the Tea. Ac cording to her, a financial contribution will be made to ward the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial to be erected in Marshall Park. Rev. Mayhew Bostic, will present its Annual Mission Day Pro gram on Sunday, March 27, at 2:30 p.m. Rev. J.A. Cuthbertson of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church will be the guest speaker. WOODLAWN UNITED The Adult Choir of Wood lawn United Presbyterian Church under the direction of Mrs. Elizabeth Thomas and Mrs. Mattie Reid presented their spring concert themed “We can make it together," on Sunday, March20, at2:30p.m. in the Church’s sanctuary. During the concert the 28 member choir rendered 25 hymns and gospel songs be ginning with “We’ve Come This Far By Faith," ending with "To The Glory of God.” Bomer Sailer was pianist for the occasion. During the occasion Mrs. Sally Miller was crowned Woodlawn's Queen of Gospel, 1977. Also, Mrs. Betty An drews was crowned Princess, of Love and Unity, 1977. The choir really worked hard to make the program a success, for in three weeks they raised 31262.75 in which they gave to the Church’s building fund. GRIER HEIGHTS UNITED The Annual Women’s Day Celebration was held on Sun day, March 20, at Grier Hei ghts United Presbyterian Church. Featured guest spea ker for the event was TS\ Bertha Maxwell. Presiding over the 11 a.m. worship service was Ms. Ma- 1 mie Moore, president of the * United Presbyterian Women's J Organization. Organizers of ) the program used the National theme: “Live Into Hope." The Grier Heights Gospel Choir provided music for the pro gram. Dr. Maxwell, who has serv ed as teacher and principle in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System, presented as her subject: "These Abideth Faith, Hope, and Love." Dr. Maxwell, who is a former staff member at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, is now the Vice President of Administrative Affairs at Johnson C. Smith University. Rev. Raymond Worsley, the active Pastor of Grier Hei ghts, delivered the closing remarks. The event proved to be a very inspiring one.
