SDoru DCOI BY BILL JOHNSON telling it like it is. When the shouting and celebrating subside next week, it is hoped here that sports fans in the Charlotte area will continue to show some genmne love and appreciation for the University of North Carolina at Charlotte basketball team that has captured the hearts of millions with its performance in the NCAA Playoffs in Lexington Ky. and Bloomington. Ind. It’s wonderful to mob Cedric “Cornbread” Maxwell, who captured MVP trophies at both tournaments. He’s most deserving. It’s grand to report to the airport in great numbers to welcome the team home from trips. They’ve proven their rights to be acclaimed as one of the best in the country. We’ll even go along with throwing expensive toilet paper out of dorm wmdows. An avid fan needs ways to release his pent-up emotion. We’ll take a fond understand ing of those who wait in impossible lines under incredible duress for the available tirkpis However, the sound of the victory bell will shortly die and, generally the victors are soon forgotten, and their performance becomes only a record for history. It shouldn’t be this way. This reporter would like to see the basketball fans in the Charlotte area rally around the 49ers with the kind of support that will prove worthy of their efforts which catapulted UNCC and Char lotte onto the basketball maps for two straight years. The good citizens of this city should immediately purchase all of the 11,400 seats at the Charlotte Coliseum for next season’s games. This kind of enthusiastic support would give Coach Lee Rose invaluable assistance in his bid to build a major-league schedule. Few, if any, teams in the country would turn down an opportunity to play before a sellout crowd, and Rose would be armed with excellent credentials to support his recruiting program HITTING THE HIGH NOTES Doc Ellis, the controversial pitcher with the New York Yankees, is making big plans to marry lovely Renee Washington, a professional model for Saks Fifth Avenue in New York and New Jersey. The date has been set for this summer in Pittsburgh, Pa. He sent his charges indoors at J.T. Williams’s gym this week for practice. Morgan State has added another MEAC title to its prized trophy case. The Bears won the conference sixth annual wrestling championship in Greensboro last week. Bill Hayes continues to corrall top athletes for the Winston-Salem State football squad. Among the six recruits signed last week .were Keny Washington, 6-3, 270-pound offensive tackle from Bond Wilson High in Charleston, S.C. and David Fraley, 6-1,180-pound quarterback from Millege ville, Ga. Hayes is also high on Maurice Shands, 6-3, 210-pound running back from Armstrong High in Richmond, Va. “He’s a super athlete he’s got 38 inch vertical jump. He could develop into the best back ever at this school,” is Hayes’ evaluation of the 9.7 sprinter. Remember Steve Joyner and Cecil Bradshaw, the Winston-Salem natives who provided some memorable moments on the basketball courts for the Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University a few years back? They’re back together again.
