Burke The Young At Heart Gub met at the Greenville Neigh borhood Center on Thursday, March 24 at 12 noon with Mrs. Sally P. Kelly presiding. Rev. D.G. Burke, a member of the Young At Heart Club and the Afro-American Cul tural Society at Spirit Square, reported on the research that is being done on North Caro lina and Mecklenburg County churches, stating that ap proximately 30 churches have been documented. Rev. Gyde Liggin gave a report about many note worthy and in fluential Afro-American lea ders. He sUted that 33 placee of influential Afro-Americana -have been selected as histori cal sights. During the catered luncbeoo that' followed the meetinf members exchanged flowers and garden seeds. Hostesses for the meeting were Mrs. Amie Coleman, Mrs. Estella' Stowe and Mrs. Marion Ed wards. I Guests who attended the meeting were Mrs. Irene Hunt, Mrs. Margaret David son, Mrs. Vivian Washington, Mrs. C.Jones and Israel Gar rison. Smith University will be observed on Sunday, April 3 at 3:30 p.m. in the University Church. Dr. Ben jamin F. Payton, Program Officer for Higher Education and Research of the Ford Foundation, New York Gty will be the guest speaker. Dr. Payton, a native of Orangeburg, &uth Carolina, is the former President of Benedict College in Columbia. In his present position, he serves as head of the Ford Foundation's expanded $100 million program of assistance to minorities in higher educa tion. He is responsible for the Foundation’s grants for Blacks, Mexican-Americans, Puerto Rican and American Indian undergraduate and graduate students, for select ed graduate level ethic studies programs, and for the streng thening of selected traditional ly black cdleges and other minority institutions.
