The invitation, which read “you’re invited to participate in the Kemper Open Golf Tourna ment during Press Day on Tuesday, April 19,’’ was gladly accepted with a great measurement of sincere pride. After all, not many in the large category of the golfers who are not highly skiUed at the game and who are fondly referr^ to as “Duffers,” can tell their grandchildren that they have played in the pr^tigious Kemper Golf Tournament. This is the tournament where all of the biggies of golfdom appear. Imagine the opportunity to rub shoulders with the likes of Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Pete Brown, Jim Dent and Lee Elder! WOW! Therrfore. with new found pride and an expanding chest, this reporter dusted off the old go3F clubs and invited^Pbst staff members, rolunmtet Bob Jc^inson and production manager Bmiard Reeves, to a “little round of golf” last Friday afternoon after work. They jumped at the importunity to play with one of golTs newest celebrities, with the great expectation of receiving some tips on how the -game should be played from a man who is going to brag the rest of his life about having played in the Kemper. You gotta b^eve that my reputation as a golfer is well established. There is some notoriety in the fact that the only people I can heat conaistenfly are photographer James Peel- ^ and^ Inaiwginpeman r!harl«»s Ramseur and, occasionally CMS principal ~Rdussaii: Therefore, with the Kemp^ invitaticm protrud ing from my h^) podiet for all to see. The Kid drove out to City Golf Coiurse early Fri^y for an ^ aiUanoou in the suuslune—and somo well——, Post SUiff Writer When Curtis Wilson speaks, he speaks with the confidenca and assertiveness of a senior. The Myers Park sophomore is being honored by the Post this week because of his ef forts as a centerfielder on the Mustang baseball team, which is one of the county’s bat. PresenUy Curtis is batth^ .500 and, just last week, had three hits in Tive trips to the plate, including a homer in the first inning as the Mustangs upset the Wildcats of Garin- ger, 3 to 1. “I’m so proud of him,” said his mother, Mrs. Cleola Wil son of 1943 Merriman Avenue. “He’s been playing all sports since he started school. We have trophies everywhere,” she exclaimed. The exact trophies count for the speedster, who runs the 100 yard dash in 9.8 is 43. They include several most valuable trophies and they represent baseball, football, basketball and track. Hiis year Wilson played halfback on the football team, and was a guard on the second best junior varsity basketball team in the county. Of his favorite sports, Wil son can not decide whether he likes football more than base ball or vice-versa. The S’ev^,” 168-pounder sayk he is “tom between the two, although baseball was his Hrst love at age .,6.” The 16-year old admits that his most thrill ing moment comes from the gnmron. “I would like to remember desorved recreation to give a couple of duffers some tips on the finer pmnts of the game. The ego was deflated quite a bit when Bob and Bernard were waiting...eagerly with no appa rent signs of fear. It went down even further when the num in the golf shop barked angrily; “We ain’t got no riding carls! ” Imagine a Kemper celebrity walking around a golf course, toting a heavy golf bag with no oadty! — - Needless to say, things got progressively worse. First of all, tte Kid slammed a neat drive l»g down the middle. So did Boys. But Bernard didh’t disturb the ball with is first try and he drffled it only a few feet off the tee with his sepnncL Nevertheless, he SAID he had a six on thkfireA hole, tying Bob and me. whm it suddenly dawned on me that if theYBd is to give some tips on the finer points of playing golf, held better first learn how to count. It's not very funny watching your lunch change go down the drain to a slick, no-playing duffer whpis an accountant major recently graduated froin the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. for ever the time in junior high school when I got hit by four tacklers in a game with Alex- nnriep Graham Hlgii^ g^f loose, came back down stand ing up and raced 80 yards for a touchdown," he recalls. In that game Curtis had 410 yards and his team won 18-6. He admires Jim Brown for his style of running and Chris Everett because “that’s the way I want to win.” If Curtis could go anywhere in the world where would he go? “I would go to Buffalo, New York. I would like to have a conversation with O.J. Simp son and tell him I was going to break all the records he has set,” said the confident sopho more who may get his chance one day. Other outstanding perfom- ers of last week were Eric Lanier of West who bit 3 for 3, stole a base, scored three times, walked once, and bad 3 Tri|^ County It also dawned on me that maybe UNCC is, winning all of those basketball games, because smnebody out there certainly teaches exception al math.
