tL ENTERTAINMENT Γ THE CHARLOTTE POST F«MI Growing Community WrcUy· Thurwtay, April U, U77-THE CHARLOTTE POST-Page Bl JCSU Students To Present "The Unsung Hero" "The Unsung Hero," an ori ginal Bicentennial drama written by Dr. Helen Othow, assistant professor of English at Johnson C. Smith Univer sity, will be performed by the Drama Workshop at Smith under the direction of Heneri etta Rhedrick, Director of Dramatics at Smith. This Bicentennial drama, which is an adaptation of the life of James Roberts, a Black unsung hero of the revolun tionary war, is in keeping with the themé "The Spirit of 76 The Black Man's, Too." This drama is not only about the life of Roberts, but it commemorates the contribu tions of other Blacks who have fought for ideals of freedom which are inherent in the American Revolution, and is also related to ideas in the famous TV series, "Roots." Performances will be held Saturday, April 23 at 8:15 p.m. and Sunday April 24 at 5 p.m. in the University Chapel. The drama which is co sponsored by the Afro-Ameri- . can Cultural and Service Cen ter, will be presented at Spirit Square on Monday April 25, 8:15 p.m. There wMi,be no admission for the Smith performance. Spirit Square performance is . $1 for students and $2.50 gene ral admission. Scared Heart To Present Spring Musicale A "Spring Musicale" will be presented by the music stu dents of Sacred Heart CoUege and The CoUege Singers. The program includes choral se lections by The College Sing ers from "The Sound of Music and "Fiddler on the Roof," as well as other contemporary and sacred pieces. Vocal and piano selections will include performances by Michael Parker, James Brad sher, Audrey Thornton, Chry stal Thornburg, Cassandra McLean, Joseph Artero, Sam Bishop, Jeff Cray, David A bowd and Helena Gumatao tao. The "Spring Musicale" will be presented at eight o'clock on the evening of Thursday, April 28, in McAuley Hall at Sacred Heart College. The performance is free and the public is cordially invited. Graham Central Station Releases Impressive Album By Melvetta Wright Post Staff Writer "Can You Handle It," "Feel The Need," and "Your Love" are all hit singles from very impressive albums that have come out 01 Larry Graham's Graham Central Station. Made up of Larry Graham, the leader of this innovative group, Gail "Baby Face" Mul drow, Hers hell "Happiness" Kennedy. Robert "Butch" Sam, David "Dynamite" Ve ga, and Gaylord "Flash" Burch, Graham Central Sta tion came into being in Janua ry, 1973. The products of this dyna mic group have behind them years of hard work, training, and experience. —At the age of five, Larry Graham began taking dance lessons. By the time he was eight he started taking piano lessons and before he was in his teens, Larry had learned to play all keyboard instru ments, the guitar, the harmo nica, and drums and had developed an octave vocal range of 3Ά At age 15 Larry started playirui bass while performing with his mother, Dell (iranam, in a San Francisco night club. During this time Larry met Sly Stone, and for six years was bassist and one of the lead singers for Sly and the Family Stone. Gail "Baby Face" Muldrow is the newest member of the group She's been singing since childhood and began playing guitar in 1973, inspired by Larry Graham and John Mclaughlin. She's lived in the East Bay area all her life. Her first public appearance with Graham Central Station was In New York at Warner Bro thers' "California Soul" show at the Beacon Theatre on February 2», 1976. Her first recording appearance with Graham Central Station is on their fourth album, MIRROR, which was released at the end of May, 1976. Hershell "Happiness" Ken nedy left college after three years as a music major, to join Little Sister. He is one of Larry's friends who helped to form Hot Chocolate, which became Graham Central Sta tion. Hershell plays clarinet, piano, organ and trumpet. He also writes music and adds great color and musicianship to the .group. David "Dynamite" Vega was also an original Hot Cho colate member who became a vital part of Graham Central Station. He started playing the guitar at age 11, saying that he was inspired by George Ben son and Jlmi Hendrix. At age 16 he felt that he was ready to play Fillmore West in San Francisco. With Graham Cen tral Station he handles both lead and rhythm guitar as well as singing. He says that he enjoys being in Larry Gra ham's "holster, always ready to shoot out the notes of Beautiful Music." Robert "Butch" Sam began playing the piano and organ in church at the age of 6. Al though he never took formal lessons, at age 12 he was directing choirs, and at 17 he joined Masters Children. Be fore joining Graham Central Station, Butch played key boards with Billy Preston for two years. During that time he wrote three songs which ap pear on Billy Preston's al bums. Gaylord "Flash" Burch came to Graham Central Sta tion after playing with the Pointer Sisters for two years. Another member from the Bay area, Gaylord started playing congas at age 5 and took up playing drums in high school at the age of 16. He also performed with the Ed win Hawkins Singers and Cold Blood, doing recording with Herbie Hancook and Stevie Wonder developed music fundamen tals such as theory, writing and harmony while in the service in Washington, D.C. He started playing profession ally with the Uptights and he Perhaps feeling innovated in the execution of his music wasn't enough, because Gra ham took to some technology cal inroads on the latest al bum, NOW DO U WANNA DANCE He introduced the world's first talking bass, a device which enabled his agile voice to come jumping right out of his base guitar. Pendergrass To Visit Soul Train Teddy Pendergrass, who gained fame as a drummer and vocalist with Harold Mel vin and the Blue Notes, and Double Exposure, a quartet with roots in Philadelphia, are highlighted on Soul Train this weekend. A singer since age two, an ordained minister since age 10, Pendergrass has returned to his first love--singing. Now a single act, he delivers "You Can't Hide From Yourself," "Somebody Told Me To Deliv er This Message" and "The More I Get, The More I Want.·' Double Exposure sings two message songs from the al bum, EVERYMAN MUST CARRY HIS OWN WEIGHT - "Ten Percent" and "My Love Is Free." Joseph Harris , Charles Whittington, Leonard Davis and James Williams are the members of the tightly . knit quartet which originated 12 years ago as the United Image. The group has gained popu larity chiefly on the East Coast in solo appearances and with such entertainers as Billy Paul, Sly and the Family Stone and Blue Magic Soul Train is produced by Don Cornelius. "Merry Window" le Free To (MS Juniors, Seniors The Charlotte City Council.
