WBTV Looks A WBTV special entitled, "The Way We Were-The Way We Are," takes a look at the desegregation movement, Sunday, April 24 at 6:30 p.m. on Channel 3. WBTV's Abigail Flanders, who wrote and produced the program, talks to people who were and are involved in the movement. Among them: Do ing High School in Charlotte; Charles Jones, who was the leader of the sit-in demonstra tion in Charlotte in 1960; Cal vin Harris, a participant in the sit-in demonstration; Leroy "Pop" Miller, who was Assis tant Principal of West Char lotte High in 1970; David Belton, former student and now teacher at West Char lotte; and several students now attending West Charlotte. The program shows how desegregation started, the problems involved at the time, bow it is working now, and «bat has happened to some of the people who participated. "The Way We Were-The Way We Are" has the distinc tion of being the first non-news ■bow that WBTV has produced «stirely on location with Elec tric News Gathering equip ment. Barber-Scotia Sets Arts Festival Barber-Scotia College is presenting its second annual Black Arts Festival week which began Monday, April 18, and continues through Sat urday, April 23. υη Thursday, April 21, the Louis Johnson Dance Theatre from New York City, one of the most exciting new groups on the American performing art scene, will perform a repertoire of classical, con temporary, and Afro Ameri can arrangements under the direction of Louis Johnson. Johnson is the artistic direc tor who was credited for the Broadway Production of "Purlie" which starred the talented Melba Moore, and Scott Joplin's "Tremonisha." Friday, April 22, will feature a live jazz concert with Char lotte's Juici Carter and his Universe Band performing. Also appearing will be the Direction of Atlanta Singers. On Saturday, April 23 there will be an open air arts exhibit (open to the college communi ty). Barber-Scotia opened its Black Arts Festival week with the Broadway production ol "Catch A Rising Star.'' which was held on Tuesday. April lit. On Wednesday, April 2u. the Festival continued with ,.n evening of cultural enrich ment with Klma Lewis, the founder and director of the National Center of Afro Ame rican Artists of Koxbury, Massachusetts i he Racers" Will Be On Location Here "The Racers," a new na tionwide television series hos ted by two-time Indianapolis 500 champion Johnny Ruther ford, will be "on location" for the Spring Sprints sports car road races, this weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The weekly half-hour pro gram, already aired on more than 90 stations coast to coast, devotes special attention to racing events never before seen on TV-events that span the varied world of motor sports competition. During the Spring Sprints, a 13-race weekend of SCCA Re gional, Pro Formula Ford and National Championship com petition. "The Racers" will focus on Ken Slagle, a highly successful D-Production driv er from Pennsylvania. Camping is free for the entire weekend.
