Babe Ruth Officials To Meet Tuesday Lloyd Harris, president of the newly organized Babe Ruth Baseball League that will serve youngsters in West Charlotte, said Monday that the "league is progressing beautifully." "We'll meet Tuesday night at the McCrorey Branch YMCA to discuss the schedule, rules of the organization, con dition of the playing fields and plan dates for pre season practice sessions," Harris pointed out. The league, which will pro vide recreation for boys in the 13-15 age bracket, will play a 10-game schedule, starting in late May or early June. "We aren't sure when we'll start playing," Harris ex plained. "We have to wait until school closes before we get underway." McGirt Predicts Bulls1 Success Head Coach Eddie McGirt of the Johnson C. Smith Uni versity Golden Bulls hesitates to predict the success of his team and the performances of his star players. "I'm waiting until the Spring Football Game before I make any predictions," said the friendly and successful coach of the preennial Central Intercollegiate Athletic Con-' ference powers. Over 80 young men have been practicing on spring af ternoons in preparation for the annual Blue-Gold game to be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 23. They are running patterns and learning defensive strate gy in anticipation of a fall schedule that is highlighted by a Homecoming game against the Eagles of North Carolina Central University on Novem ber Β and a visit by the South Carolina State Bulldogs on October ·. Other home games, all of which will be played in Char lotte Memorial Stadium, in clude Virginia Union on Sep tember 17 at 8 p.m.; Living stone on October 15 at 8 p.m.; and Virginia State on Novem ber 19 at 1:30 p.m. On the road the Bulls will face Lenoir Rhyne in Hickory on September 10 in their open ing game at 7:30 p.m.; Hamp ton at 1:30 p!m.; North Caro ton at l':30 p.m.; North Caro lina A4T in Greensboro at 7 p.m. on October 1; Shaw in Raleigh on October 22 at 1:30 p.m.· Nelson. Whittmgton Saves Omega Little League Franchise ui me commit ment of young Dennis Obrien Nelson and former city coun cilman Jim Whittington, about 90 boys will get the opportuni ty to play baseball this sum mer. The combined efforts of Nel son and Whittington have made it possible for the contin uation of the Omega Little League which operates with six baseball teams in the westside community. "We hardly made it through last season," Nelson said Mon day afternoon. "And we felt that we were through as a league until Mr. Whittington came along." Nelson continu ed, "Mr. Whittington helped us a great deal and pointed us in the right direction." The young man discounts his own involvement with, "I have a lot of praise for my old coach Richard "Hank" Sar tors, who made a contribution to the young boys in the P-ί—.i ** · 1 thought that maybe helping young boys should be my commitment to my commu nity." Nelson has obligated him self to the tremendous task s of rounding up dedicated coa ches for each of the six teams and to help them to fill their rosters with eager young boys between the ages of nine and 12.
