James A. Faison. >. The guest speaker for the î occasion will be Dr. F.M. £ Livingston of Dallas. Texas, f. who is President of the Na tional Primitive Baptist Con vention of the USA. * Among the guests expected j£ to attend are Mayor John " Belk, School Board Chairman Phil Berry, Councilman Har vey Gantt and Commissioner Bob Walton. Presently located at 2230 Bancroft St., the church was originally located on Oliver St. in a building erected by the members. They moved to their present site approxi mately 10 years ago. EAST STONEWALL By Rena Blake Special To The Poet The Pastor's Aid Board of the New East Stonewall ΑΜΕ Zion Church will celebrate its fifty-seventh Anniversary on May 22 by holding two spec ml services, a concert at 2:30 p.m. and a worship service beginning at 5 p.m. There will also be a "Princess Parade" on Saturday at 5 p.m. sponsor ed by the Aid's Board, mark ing the pre-celebration of its * anniversary. The concert at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday will present the Bel fonte Presbyterian Church Choir of Harrisburg. Rev. Ed die Weathers and members ο» the Melfield United Church of Christ of Greensboro, will ren der services for the Aid Board at S p.m. For the past fifty-seven years, members of Pastor's Aid Board have been working together as a group or indivi I dually to raise money to assist the pastor. Their specialty is goepel music and they are accompa nied by The Gospel Echoes who will also perform several numbers alone. The Gospel Echoes are di rected by Evangelist Ervin Millsaps, who is lead singer and lead guitarist, and by yvooarow Millsaps. Kenneth Smith is featured on bass guitar and the drummer is Ernest Millsape In addition, the Smith Grove Church Choir from Hiddenite will appear. This a capeila choir is under the direction of Ms. Sylvia Smith. Mrs. Queen Estelle Thomp son will also be honored for her service to the church and to the community on this evening. Thomp son of Charlotte, director, said monies will go to help: Shady Grove United Metho dist Church of the Marion District and Glencoe United Methodist Church of the Greensboro District. Shady Grove Church is building a new sanctuary. The church is located near Hicko ry in 9 growing area with "great promise for future growth. Glencoe Church of the Mid way Charge, located in a rural area northwest of Greensboro, is building a fellowship hall which will include educational space. Thifr'congregation has produced seven Christian mi nisters. Members of the Builders Club pledge to give five dol lars or more to each of three calls for funds a year. A committee selects churches to receive funds iS »·μι full The Builders Club, in its 16th year, received $23,255.97 from the January, 1977, call, with funds going to help Union United Methodist Church of the Albemarle District, and Maple Springs United Metho dist Church of Coleridge. PARKWOOD The Wee Ushers of Park wood Institutional CME Church celebrated their first anniversary with a special service recently at 3 o'clock. The pastor, Rev. C.M. Allen, was featured speaker. Organized under the super vision of Mrs. Mamie La»ter and Mrs. Tommie Fleming, the Wee Ushers serve each fourth Sunday at the 11 a.m. worship. These young people also comprise the Altar Guild and two are selected each week to assist the pastor during morning worship. Parkwood Institutional CME Church is located at 1021 Parkwood Ave. ST. MARK Rev. A.G. Coley was install ed Sunday, May ·, as minister of St. Mark Baptist Church, 615 Grandin Road., with Rev. Clinton Davis presiding. The installation sermon was P—■■■— preached by Rev. R.M Young, pastur uf St.Patf Community Church and the charge to Rev. Coley and the congregation was delivered by Rev. F.G. Lowry. The instal lation prayer was offered by Rev. B.M. McKenzie. Rev. Coley was born in Selma and educated in the public schools there. He earn ed several degrees from Shaw University. Prior to coming to Charlotte he served at Liberty Hill Baptist Church in Clare mont. He is married to the former Fannie Foster of Henderson and they have two grown sons. SILVER MOUNT The Silver Mount Baptist Church Junior Musical Choir of Pineville will present their annual concert on Sunday, May 22, at 6:30 p.m. This choir sings every first and third Sunday at the regular 11 o' clock service and every fifth Sunday on "Youth for Christ Day" at Silver Mount. They are often featured on "The Glimpse of Hope Broadcast" "Tieârtl «acll Sunday from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. on WGIV. Rev. William Lee Jr, the pastor, stated that he and the congregation are extremely proud of Mrs. Birdie M. O wens, the directress, and the hard work and patience she has put into making this one of the best youth choirs that can be found anywhere. He added that there was standing room only at last year's concert and the same is expected this year. In addition to the con cert the choir members have been engaged in a Popularity Contest that will climax at the close of the program. Among the awards to .be granted the most outstanding workers will be an all ex" s pense paid trip to the Nation al Baptist Sunday School Con ff«=« - m rating next month In Houston, Texas. Some of the youth will visit Altanta, Ga., where they will tour such historical land-marks as the birth place and grave site of the late Dr. Martin L. King Jr. Others will enjoy a full day of fun at Carowinds Amuse ment Park while another group will be treated to dinner at a restaurant in Rock Hill, SC. The public is urged to come out and share this evening of entertainment. GREATER MT. MORLAH The Male Chorus of Greater Mount Moriah Baptist Church will present their annual con cert Sunday, May 22, at β p.m. Featured soloist will be James Morrison singing "Mo ving Up Zion Hill" and Elijah Kitchen singing "In The Gar den." The choir is under the direc tion of Woodrow Richardson, who is also the accompanist. Willie Robertson is President j and Elijah Kitchen is Vice president. ;· The church is located at 747 West Trade St. and is pastored by Rev. Thomas W. Samuels. SECONDCALVARY The Laymen's League of Second Calvary Baptist Church, 114 Nelson Ave., will sponsor a program of Gospel music at 6:30 p.m., Sunday, May 22. Several guest musical j groups will appear along with ι Second Calvary's own choirs. All musical groups in the area' are invited to participate. Admission is free and the' public is urged to attend. The Kuest speaker will be Miss Siirley Johnson. Miss Johnson is a well knowi figure in the city, having worked in the Charlotte-Meek - lenburg School System as a teacher. She is now a Commu nity Relations Specialist with the system. Miss Johnson's theme will be "Moving Toward Love." Amay James is located at 3400 West Boulevard and the pastor is Rev. M.A. Cochrane NEW EMMANUEL The Gingham Girls, a group of retired women, ranging in age from 60 to 86, will perform " at New Emmanuel Congrega Hanal Church on Friday, May XI, at 6:30 p.m. Noted for their colorful cos tumes, which consist of ging ham dresses and old-fashion ad sun bonnets, The Gingham Girls play such unusual instru ments as wash boards, wash tub·, spoons and kazoos. The tunes they perform are mostly the old-time favorites - "She'll Be Coming 'Round The Moun tain," "Alexander's Ragtime Band," and "Dark Town Strutter's Ball^—^to name a few. They also do some of the old religious melodies, such as "I Saw The Light." Since they were organized about two and a half years ago, The Gingham Girls have performed, on a volunteer basis, before Senior Citizen groups, in nursing homes and in churches. Ms. Trudy Glen, who aids the group in procur ing bookings and with trans portation, says the women enjoy themselves as much as the audiences do. A jpahgetti dinner will be servea during the perfor mance. The public is invited to partake on * firetcome. first - served basis. MAYFIELD MEMORIAL ~ ι Mayfield Memorial Baptist Church, located at 700 Sugar Creek Road West, will hold its annual Women's Day Celebra tion, Sunday, May 22. On that day the women of the church will be in charge of both morning and evening ser vices. Mrs. J.B. McLester, Presi dent of the Women's Home and Foreign Missionary Con - vention of North Carolina, will be featured speaker during the morning service. At that same time, Mayfield's Woman of the Year will be announced. Selection of Woman of thf»_ Year is determtned^by secret ballot and all members of the church are eligible to vote. Last year's winner was Mrs. H S. Diggs. The speaker for the 6 o'clock evening servie* will he Mrs. Doris Thomas, a member of May field Memorial. Music for both services will be provided by female mem bers of the church's five choirs and will be directed by Mrs. Barbara Alexander, Minister of Music of Mayfield, who will also be at the organ. Rev. H.S. Diggs is Pastor and extends an invitation to the public to attend these services. CHINA GROVE China Grove AME Zion Church choir will appear in concert at the church on Sun day, May 22, at 6:30 p.m. The choir is under the direc tion ofjamesA. Wilson and the accompanists are Mrs. Yvonziner Cuthbertson and Mrs. Joyce Zimmerman. Sun day's concert will feature a variety of music including hymns, spirituals, anthems, and gospel. During intermis sion the Singing Crusaders of Charlotte will be guest artists. Rev. M.L. Houston is minis ter of the church located at 9401 Old Pineville Road.
