Palmer twas paator of University Past Baptist Church since 1171. Under his leadership the church rolls have increased by 400 members and the weekly offerings have tripled. In recognition of the Baa work he is doing, the congre gation annually bODOTS him with an Appreciation Day. This year’s celebration wil include a banquet on Friday evening, May 27 and an Ap preciation Day service on Sue day, May 29. The banquet will be held at the Greenville Neighborhood Center and among the invited guests will be Rev. and Mrs. Norman Kerry, Rev. and Mrs R.H. Leake, Rev. and Mrs. Andrew Cuthbertaon and Rev. and Mrs. Patti Drummond. Mistress of Ceremonies for this occasion will be Mrs. Euls Chandler, with the invocation by Rev. Drummond. Peace of mind is1 her main goal and she says she has begun to achieve that over the past few months with the help of s very dear friend who helped her stop, and look at herself and her life and decide upon a direction. The Berean Gospel Choir of the Berean SDA Church, 1801 Double Oaks Road, will bold their Anniversary Musical program on Sunday May 29 at 4 p.m. Participating with the Be rean Gospel Choir on the program will be The Ray Sisters, Iris and Theresa, from Raleigh, N.C.; Ms. Ann Mackey, a member of the Charlotte Oratorio Singers; the Charlotte Big Sisters; the Saint Luke Baptist CMUrch Choir featuring Dr. Roy An derson; and Dr. Huey M. Rowe-Anderson. The public is invited to attend the program. MAYFIELD MEMORIAL There was a tie for both first neia its annual Woman of the Year Service recently. Selec tion of Woman of the Year is made by secret ballot with ali members of the congregatior eligible to vote. The two first place winner: were Mrs. Martha Abel anc Mrs. Carol Bridges, while se cond place went to Mrs. Eliza beth Kelly and Mrs. H.S Diggs, who was first place winner in 1976. Mrs. Bridges is the secre tary for Mayfield, an advisor to the Young People’s Organi zation, a member of the Spiri tual Choir, the Pastor's Aid Club, Missionary Group No. S and is a Deaconess. She has been officially named a life time member of the Women's Baptist Home Missionary Con vention oi N.C. and was the Mrs. Abel is President of the Hymn Choir at Mayfield and is a member of the Benevolence Committee, Missionary Group No. 1, the Building Committee and the Budget Committee. Guest speaker for the ser vice was Mrs. J.B. Diggs, President of Women's Home and Foreign Missionary Con vention of N.C. The minister of Mayfield Memorial is Rev H.S. Diggs MAYFIELD MEMORIAL Eight years ago when May field Memorial Baptist Church was struggling to become es tablished, Dr. J.A. NEW EMMANUEL Mrs. Queen Estelle Thomp son, well known business per son, civic leader and lay church worker, is coordinator for a series of programs to be presented at New Kmniin^ Baptist Church May 27-2». Among the events are a *ehgetti supper; a perfor mance by The Gingham Girls, a Senior Citisens singing Croup; a presentation by Clifford and Frankie Johnson, a husband and wife mission ary team who have traveled evening of music featuring The Ambassadors, The Gospel Echoes andihe Smith Grove Church Choir. _ MOTHER HOUSE OF ._PRAYER It was a dose race but Master Antoine Ford and Miss Fonda Phifer won out over some keen competitors to be crowned May King and May Queen at the Mother House of Prayer recently. Antoine, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Ford, came in >ist ahead of Bernard Davis, the son of Mrs. Queen Davis. Fonda, daughter of Mrs. Caro lyn Phifer, edged out Regina Bolden, whose parents are Elder and Mrs. S.L. Bolden.” Hie program, which was held at the church at 2123 Beattie Ford Road, was the climax of the annual May Day celebration and was presented by the Young People’s Choir. Mrs. Gloria Dixon is presi dent of the choir and coordi nated the program. C.N. JENKINS “The Sensational Voices of the Byrds” will be heard at C.N. Jenkins United Presby terian Church, 1321 Statesville Ave., Sunday, May 29, at 3 p.m. This seven-member gospel group is from Lawrence, S.C. and has traveled extensively throughout the southeastern part of the U.S., according to a spokesman. They have been singing together for about four years and are under the ma nagement of Bobby Herbert. Sunday afternoon’s pro gram is sponsored by Mrs. Rena Blue and is a fund-rais ing effort to benefit her drive to be crowned queen when the “Calendar Tea” is held in June. The tea is an annual went with 12 candidates, each representing a month, compe ting to raise the largest sum of money for the building fund. Rev. ' I • “slater cfiurcbes.’*' Charlotte Tenni§ Qub To Host Meet The Charlotte local tourna ment of the third annual Equi table Family Tennis Chal lenge, a unique mixed doubles competition which will culmi nate with championship play offs at Forest Hills during the U.S. Open in September, will be contested at the Charlotte Tennis Club, 8401 Sharon Lak es Rd. on June 26. In all, 128 local tournaments will be held, with the winners advancing to 16 sectional tour naments (scheduled between July 24 and August 21) and those victors heading for Fo rest Hills. The tournament, sponsored by the Equitable Life Assu rance Society of the United States, brings together family =team8_of_mothers and sons; fathers and daughters; grand mothers and grandsons; and grandfathers and grand daughters. These are the only combinations allowed. The tournaments, conduct ed in cooperation with the United States Tennis Associa tion, are limited to ameteurs who have not been ranked by the USTA since January l, , 1972. Teaching pros and Unit- i ed States Professional Tennis Association members are not eligible. The youth cannot turn 19 by October 1, 1977, and there must be at least 15 years age difference between team members. The deadline for entering is June 1.
