FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK By Hoyle H. Martin Sr State Representative Henry M. Michaux Jr. was named last week a U.S. attorney for North Carolina’s Middle Dis trict by President Carter. The 46-year-old legislator, busi nessman (Union Insurance and Reality Co.) and prac ticing attorney served as Dur ham County’s first black as sistant district attorney from 1969 to 1973 when he was elected to the N.C. General Assembly. Michaux was sponsored by U.S. Senator Robert Morgan. + + + According to news report, “disagreement over (their au to) tags took more time in the (state) Senate (last) week than did either the $8 billion state budget or the multi-mil lion (dollar) bill dealing with electric generating plant costs.” I I I A report released by the National Minority Purchasing Council (NMPC) states that purchases of goods and ser vices from minority-owned firms was 55 percent higher in 1976 than in 1975. Specifically, such purchases reach $797 million in 1976 as opposed to $514 million in 1975. A non-profit corporation, NMPC was organized in 1972 by a group of business execu tives working with the Office of Minority Business Enter prise, a division of the U.S. Department of Commerce. + + + Rov Wilkins, 75 and retiring = Hoyle H. Martin Sr. after 22-years as executive director of the NAACP, told a news conference prior to th« opening of the organization's 68th annual convention that he had two words of advice for the nearly 4,000 delegates (in cluding 100 from North Caro lina): “Be Alert.” 4 4 4 Congresswoman Barbara Jordan, the nearly forgotten Texas Democrat who was so instrumental in helping Car ter’s bid for the presidency, told a Womankind Conference on Sunday that women's rights are being set-back by a "perceptible shift of America to the right...(and a) diminish ed commitment” requires new plans and new approach es to ending sexism. 4 4 4 Jimmy J.J. Walker, star of TV’s "Good Times” show said in Virginia on Sunday: “Un fortunately in this society, America, we don't have a thinking society. ABC Record Distributors revealed, "When we saw orders for 20,000 Floaters albums out of Detroit and Cleveland the first two weeks of release we knew we had a monster on our hands. The sales spread to New York and Chicago the following week and we’re al ready around U million within the first month.” The fantastic initial re sponse to THE FLOATERS came on the twelve minute cut “Float On" which has since been edited down and released as a single. Virtually every major R&B station is playing “Float On" and the record has begun a rapid ascent up the pop charts. Stations are also receiving strong support for a number of other cuts, includ ing "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me." “Doric Victory” Is NBC Monday Night Movie Elizabeth Montgomery stars as a woman who falls in love and begins living life to the fullest after learning she is terminally ill, in "Dark Victo ry," to be colorcast on "NBC Monday Night at the Movies" July 4 at 9 p.m. on Channel Nine. Anthony Hopkins co-stars as Dr. Michael Grant, who diag noses her illness and falls in love with her. Katherine Merrill is a suc cessful, hard-driving morning TV talk show producer who is told she has a brain tumor. Despite her exciting job. she cannot successfully conceal a personal void in her life. Not until she is told her illness is terminal does she realize how much has been missing. After meeting Michael, her life takes on new meaning and she finds real happiness for the first time.
