The Mets won the ;*• first meeting, 5-3. | Hawks To | Compete In r State Tourney j; Walter "Dub" Cuthbertson has had a change of mind. •: Last week, the popular manager of the Charlotte :• Hawks baseball team decided against entering his club in the ; annual North Carolina State A' Semi-Pro Invitational Tournament in Lenoir, N.C., . beginning July 14. “At the time, I felt that my *: players were to inex ;• perienced to compete in the *! tournament,” Cuthbertson :: said Monday. "However, the tournament officials insisted that it would be a great *: boost to the tournament to i have the Hawks entered, so I *• changed my mind.” County Semi-Pro Baseball League contest Sunday af ternoon and whipped the Statesville Twins. 14-12, Monday afternoon. The three games were played at Har ding High School's athletic field Faoch Davis singled, stole second and raced home on a single by Tim Morris to fuse the assault against the Hawks. Davis broke a two-all deadlock with his marker and the Rangers coasted to their 19th win in 21 games from that point. Tim Morris, Ricky Summers, Davis, Londell McClary and Rudy Falls each had two hits for the winners. Ken Koontz was the winning hurler. Charley Houston. Rudy Falls, McClary and Summers led the attack against two Statesville pitchers. Houston poled a single, triple and home run while Falls was hitting three singles, McClark two singles and a double and Summers a home run and a single. Roger Coleman was the winning pitcher. He received mound help from Ricky Summers. Coleman's record is now 3-0. The Rangers, who had to cancel their game with the New Londay Cardinals which was slated for Saturday af ternoon, will return to Har ding High School's athletic field Sunday afternoon for a league contest with the Charlotte Tigers. Fauch Davis is the likely starting pitcher for the contest which is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. Moore Keys Bums Victory Over Bisco Norman Moore pitched and batted the Royal Bums to a 7-4 Triple County Semi-Pro Baseball League victory over the Bisco Chargers. Bisco took an early lead and held on until the eighth inning, 3-2. The Bums rallied for five big runs when Nate Harris drew a base on balls, Robert Moore stroked a single and John Harris tied the score with a one-base blow that delivered Nate Harris. With two out and the bases full of Bums, James Birtha lined a hard blow to centerfield which Dab Martin dropped for an error that allowed three runners to scamper home. Eugene Polk tripled home the final run of the frame. In addition to pitching a strong game, Moore lined two doubles. Danny Hinson had two singles and Rudolph Harris a pair of doubles and two rbi’s for the winners. Douglas Grier Captures Cleveland Tournament Douglas Grier, a personable young man who hits the golf balls farther and straighter than most golfers, won the Sixth City Open Invitational Golf Tournament in Cleveland, Ohio Monday, July 4. Playing in a field of more than 200 participants in the amateur division, Grier won first place in the cham pionship flight. He toured the tough Senneca Golf Course in 226 strokes to beat off his nearest challengers by two strokes. The 20-year-old youngster shot a five-over-par 77 last Saturday, an even par 72 Sunday and fell back to a 77 Monday to win one of the most prestigious golf cham pionships available to amateur golfers. For his achievement. Grier has been named the Charlotte Post’s "Golfer Of The Week.” The son of Ms. Ethel Grier of 2555 Hemphill Street is a rising senior at South Carolina State College in Orangeburg, S.C. where he is a member of the school’s golf team. Grier is also a former standout with the golf team at South Mecklenburg High School. He has also won the first flight division of a tournament held at the Gallagher Trail Golf Course recently and was second in the overall tour nament play with a 72-73 for 145. Tony Byers Cage School To Open July 17 By Jacquie Levister Post Staff Writer The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Youth Council (CMYC) has announced its second annual Tony Byers Basketball School. The school will be operating for boys and girls between the ages of 7-18 and who have not completed high school. The sessions, each of one week duration, are scheduled as follows: July 17-23 (boys), July 24-30 (boys) and July 31 - August 6 (girls). The school will be held at St. Patrick s School gymnasium, 1125 Buc hanan Street. The Tony Byers Basketball School is geared to the deve lopment of fundamental skills in all phases of the game. The focus of the school will be to teach, in addition to develop ing techniques in individual and team play, sportsman ship, leadership and proper mental attitudes, Tony Byers, the director of the program is presently As sistant Coach at Belmont Ab bey. He played collegiate bas ketball in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) at Wake Forest University, where as a junior, during the 1972-73 sea son he was the second highest scorer, behind David Thomp son. The staff for the clinic will consist of: Cedric Maxwell of UNCC and a recent draftee of the Boston Celtics; Belinda Polk, Basketball and Volley ball Coach at Northwest Ju nior High; Willie '‘Scoopie" Joplin a former player for Johnson C. Smith University and the Hazelton Bullets of New York State; and Eddie Payne, Assistant Basketball Coach - Clemson University. Other special guests will in clude Jerry Schellenberg and Skip Brown, both of Wake Forest University. The cost of this clinic is $65 per week payable at registra tion before each session. The fee includes certificates, Tony Byers T-shirts, insurance, tro phies, awards, membership with CMYC Physical Fitness Recreational Programs.
