Zion Church lay persons an opportunity for improving ef fectiveness in Church and community leadership through a program designed to: "Teach positive leadership for purposeful action.” This objective will be realized through workshops, group ses sions, special speakers, Bible Study, and workship. The keynote speaker is the Honorable Rose Mary San dres, Municipal Judge of Un iontown, Alabama. Judge San ders is a graduate of Johnson C. Smith University in the class of 1966; a graduate of Harvard University Law School in 1969; in 1970 she received the Heber Smith Fel lowship award-assigned to the National Welfare Rights Or ganization and Columbia Cen ter on Social Welfare Policy and Law. In 1970 she was the recipient of the Ford Founda tion Fellowship based at the University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria. Besides being an at torney with the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, Mrs. Sanders is a law partner in the firm of Chestnut, Sanders, and San ders. DuPont Rippy, Associate Professor of Sociology at Johnson C. Smith University, is First-Vice Pre sident and Convention Pro gram Chairman. NEW EMMANUEL Rev. N.C. Calhoun, pastor of New Emmanuel Congrega tional Christian United Chur ch, has returned to Charlotte after attending the General Synod of the Congregational Christian United Church of Christ in Washington, D.C. The Synod met at the Wash ington Hilton Hotel July 1 - 5 and, according to Rev. Cal houn, drew approximately 800 delegates and thousands of visitors and spectators. While attending the Synod, Rev. V. Calhoun participated in a march on the Capitol in behalf of “The Wilmington Ten.” He said, “Nearly ten thousand persons marched, carrying banners and chant ing such slogans as “Before I'll be a slave, I’ll be buried in my grave." and “Free the Wilmington Ten.” Speakers at the rally includ ed the mother of Rev. Ben Chavis, who asked President Carter to “assure human rights at home before interfer ing abroad." “We must clean up our own house before we Cedric Jones ...Congress president clean up their s," Rev Cal - houn added. "The United Church of Chr ist is a predominately white group, only about ten percent of its membership being black, yet it has invested $500,000 in the cause of 'The Wilmington Ten,' ” said Rev Calhoun. "New Emmanuel is the only black United Church of Christ in Charlotte and we are proud to be part of a denomination which lends such strong support to the human and civil rights of these unjustly persecuted in dividuals. I think it would be wise and prudent if more of us gave more time, attendance, and support to this cause. Let it be said that Rev. N.C. BAPTIST CONGRESS The 45th Annual Session of the Mecklenburg General Baptist Congress of Christian Education of the Mecklenburg General Baptist Association will convent at New St. John Baptist Church Thursday and Friday, July 14 and 15. Rev. R.H. Leak is pastor of New St. John, which is located in Newell. Congress officers, in structors, Sunday School Su perintendents, and B.T.U. Di rectors are expected to attend. PARK CENTER In another of many tireless efforts to raise money for the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Statue to be placed in Mar shall Park, the Rev. James Barnette has announced a MLK Dollar Day set for Sun day, July 24. Specifically, Rev. Barnette said, “We are asking everyone to take a dollar to church for Dr. King on Sunday, July 24. For those not going to church we are having a gospel sing at the Park Center where dollars will be collected between 2 and 6 p.m.” Judge Sanders ...Keynote speaker The determined chairman of the MLK Statue Committee said further, "Dr. King gave his life to change (black peo ple’s tragic past). A man that has done so much for so many should have had a memorial nine years ago." AME CHURCH The Council of Bishops of the African Methodist Episco pal Church concluded their Summer Session recently with a strong endorsement of An drew Young, United States Ambassador to the United Nations. (The full text of that endoresement may be found on page ). The Council of Bishops is the governing body for the deno mination's one and one half million members in the United States, the Carribean, and Africa between quadrennial sessions of the denomination's legislative body, the General Conference. A major action report by the Bishops was to "Reaffirm our traditional concern for wo men in the ministry,” and appointed two Bishops to work with the AD HOC Committee on Women in the Ministry. A major 1978 conference on Wo men in the Ministry was ap proved. ~ The AMt Church ordains women. The issue is how well women can serve in positions of responsibility and authori ty.
