after attending the General
Synod of the Congregational
Christian United Church of
Christ in Washington, D.C.
The Synod met at the Wash

and, according to Rev. Cal
houn, drew approximately 800
delegates and thousands of
visitors and spectators.
While attending the Synod,
Rev. V. Calhoun participated
in a march on the Capitol in
behalf of “The Wilmington
Ten.” He said, “Nearly ten
thousand persons marched,
carrying banners and chant
ing such slogans as “Before
I'll be a slave, I’ll be buried in
my grave." and “Free the
Wilmington Ten.”
Speakers at the rally includ
ed the mother of Rev. Ben
Chavis, who asked President
Carter to “assure human
rights at home before interfer

- houn added.
"The United Church of Chr
ist is a predominately white
group, only about ten percent
of its membership being
black, yet it has invested
$500,000 in the cause of 'The
Wilmington Ten,' ” said Rev
Calhoun. "New Emmanuel is
the only black United Church
of Christ in Charlotte and we
are proud to be part of a
denomination which lends
such strong support to the
human and civil rights of
these unjustly persecuted in
dividuals. I think it would be
wise and prudent if more of us
gave more time, attendance,
and support to this cause. Let
it be said that Rev. N.C.
Calhoun was proud to be in the
line of march for ‘The Wil
mington Ten’ last July L” he
concluded.
