I Julius Chambers I ...SRC president / Suitts Named I SRC Executive Director ATLANTA-Steve Suitts, head of the Alabama Civil Liberties Union for the past five years, has been named executive director of the Southern Re gional Council (SRC) effective July IS. The announcement was ma de last week by the Council's newly elected president, Juli us Chambers of Charlotte, N.C., and vice president, Gwendolyn Cherry of Miami, Fla. During Suitts’ tenure as head of the Alabama Civil Liberties Union, successful le gal actions were brought esta blishing the right of treatment for mental patients in Alaba ma, reapportioning the Ala bama legislature, and finding in Federal Court that the entire Alabama prison system was “cruel and unusual pu nishment." In another major legal action brought by the. Alabama Civil Liberties Union against the Alabama Educa tional Television Network, the Federal Communications Commission, for the first time, revoked the license of a broadcast station because of race discrimination. Chambers is an attorney with the firm of Chambers, Stein, Ferguson & Becton, P.A. He was elected to suc ceed Patt Derian who re signed as Council president when President Carter ap pointed her Coordinator of Human Rights and Humanita rian Affairs at the State De partment. A mnmKnp rtf iha G*lnMfln House of Representatives, Rep. Cherry, also an attorney, was recently elected Florida state chairperson to the Inter y national Women's, Year Com minion. ’ 07* ™ ,TM 1 Suitts, who earlier worked with the Selma Project in providing technical and legal assistance to community based groups in Southwest Alabama, believes the Coun cil’s mission in the South today is no less important than it was in 1944, when the organization was founded. “The major issues in the South at that time have not fundamentally changed,’’ he said. “They are mare com plex, perhaps, even more dif ficult to identify, yet they remain and it is the Council’s role to address them." A native of Haleyville, Ala., the 27-year old Suitts attended Coffee High School in Flo- - re nee, Ala. and the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Suitts replaces former SRC Director Peter Petkas who is deputy to the director of the President’s Reorganization Project in Washington, D.C. Since its founding in 1944, the Southern Regional Council has advanced the goals of equal opportunity and justice for all Southerners by expos ing racism and poverty and advocating creative solutions to the region's most critical problems TO GET THE POST JUST COMPLETE THE COUPON BELOW AND MAD.
