See story on page . + -4 + “Black leadership in the United States “is stronger than ever” considering the progress made into the struc tures of the corporate and political community,” says Urban League director V«*r-~ non Jordan. Jordan adds that the quality of black leadership has im proved since the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1968 “We have to under stand that the 1970s are differ ent than the 1960s, and that a new kind of leadership is required. Because of changes in the civil rights movement," Jordan continued, "five new leadership classes have e merged. These are elected officials, appointees in gov ernment and foundations, cor porate executives, the new black entrepreneurs,' and community leaders.” - -1. -L. Olympic gold medalist of the i960 Games and "the world's fastest human" in the mid 60s Bob Hayes was in Charlotte on Friday as a spo kesman for the 1977 National Youth Track and Field Pro gram. The track program is sponsored by Hershey Food, Inc., and about 75 percent of its participating youth are black. Hayes, a 10-year veteran of the National Football league, is now a Dallas, Texas corpo rate vice-president and com puter salesman. + + + Speaking to the 4,000 dele gates of the National Urban league's 67lh annual conven lion, league director Vernon Jordan said on Sunday, "Ma ny black people feel that their hopes and needs have been betrayed by the Carter Ad ministration." Addressing the same audience. President Carter said. “We will respond well to the counsel, advice, encouragement and critici WWBHI j Hoyle H. Martin Sr. . I sm” of the black community * and its leaders.” + + + Mayor John M. Belk’s deci sion not to seek re-election after serving four terms and longer than anyone else (8'£ years) in the city 209-year history, has led to speculation that Councilman Harvey Gantt, 34, might seek the vacated office. Reportedly, Gantt has said he won’t seek that office because he feels he lacks adequate public office experience at this time and further that the demands of his business would not give him sufficient time to service the needs of the office. Gantt recently said he plans to seek re-election as an at-large councilman. _1_ Approximately 2,000 people went to a Chicago supermar ket, not for food, but to apply for about 285 mostly part-time jobs. That’s about seven ap plicants for each job. One applicant' reportedly said, "We’re desperate, desperate for jobs.” Another said, “I need this job bad. I’ve been out of work for nearly five years. The city’s manpower office says unemployment among blacks in Chicago is at 10 percent. + + + Fearing that the U.S. House of Representatives may scrap the compromise minimum wage proposal of $2.65 an hour has led organized labor and its allies to form a coalition to launch an emergency cam paign to save compromise plan.
