National Guardsmen
Plan Recruiting Drive

Post Staff Writer
RALEIGH-North Carolina
National Guardsmen will par
ticipate in the most ambitious
recruiting and rentention
drive in the state guard's
210-year history between now
and September 30.
According to the recruiting
office of the 108th Division on
Westover Street, local resi
dents should expect increased
media exposure to the exis
tence of the guard and its
benefits.
Brigadier General William
K. Holoman, deputy Adjutant
General of North Carolina,
said the future of the Guard
depends on recruiting succes
ses which are part of a nation-'
al effort to increase reserve
force strength.
i ne [National ouara is a part
of the modern reserve compo
nent forces of the U S. Army
and Air Force It has histori
cal origins in the militia of
pre-Revolulionqry War Ame
rica.
Since the end of the draft
and reduction of active forces
following Vietnam, nearly half
of the United State's national
security is provided by the
reserve components Person
nel costs to the nation for
maintaining a Guardsman is
only 20 percent of the cost
of maintaining a person on
active duty.
Although the Nprth Carolina
Guard is in better shape than
most other states, Holoman
said over- 1,100 persons will
have to be recruited to bring
the Guard to full strength by
Sept. 30.
In order to achieve this goal,
each of the 150 Guard units in
the state will have to increase
its strength by to percent
more than its strength May 31
"The only way we can reach
this goal is for every man and
woman in the Guard to be
come involved in recruiting.
We've got to get more people
in the National Guard inte
rested in getting more people
into the National Guard," Ho
loman said.
The general hopes that there
will be an increase in the
number of first-time enlist
ments while the “Get Your
Guard Up" program is under
way.
"While we want enlistments
from people with prior milita
ry experience also, the long
term future of the Guard
depends on raising the num
ber of persons who are enter
ing military service for the
first time.”
w non (no uratt ended, so did
the Guard's role as an honor
able alternative to regular
military service
_ Now the National Guard
offers itself, not as an alterna
tive , hut as an attractive
activity with many incentives
for a high school graduate to
enlist for six years for men or
three years for women, he
said.
The Guard can provide high
ly technical training in many
fields and pay a person who is
receiving that training. A high
school graduate who wishes to
attend college can, by enlist
ing in the North Carolina
Guard, receive up to $500 a
year in tuition assistance as
. well as normal pay and allow
ances.
"By the end of September I
hope all of our 12,000 people
will have worked on recruit
ing," he said,
