Ms. Witherspoon said that Des Dames Koyales, Inc. was organized in September, 1972 as an organization to provide service and social projects to the community. Houston and the late Dr. Nathaniel Tross. Created in 1877 as a church news newspaper called the MESS ANGER, the paper was re-named THE CHARLOTTE POST and transformed into a .ger^bte^-orientedwaekly publication in 1918. The brain child behind this change in Charlotte’s only black news paper was A.M. Houston, a black civic leader and com mercial printer with offices on Second Street. For many years Houston guided the Post until declining health forced him to hand the management of the business to his son. Some time later the Post was purchased by Dr. Nathaniel Toss, a prominent black minister, who published the paper until his death in March of 1971. A few months later the Tross family sold the paper to oanana AiKins ana uie Gene ral Publishing Company of Belmont, North Carolina. Johnson was hired by Atkins as manager and then editor of the Post in 1971. Johnson’s impatience with the paper's progress and his desire to see the Past become "a* ffrsft-ettfss* Mtmlf-mieirted newspaper led him to pur chase the business from At kins and the General Publish ing Company in June of 1974. Johnson said at the time of the purchase, “The Charlotte black community needs a voi ce that mirrors the opinions of that community. We want the Post to provide services which the daily papers do not offer. These services to the black community will include infor mation, education, and enter tainment. We hope that the CHARLOTTE POST will be able to influence in a positive way community life.” Sunday. July Si. honoring Rev. Sonny B Turner. The speaker for the 11 a.m service will be Rev.
