Church News Briefs East Stonewall AMEZion Church Will Hear Ms. Rena Blake Here Sunday By Jen Harvey Post Staff Writer New East Stonewall AME Zion Church will host two special services in celebration of its annual Missionary Day Sunday, September 25. The first service will be at 11 a m. and will be conducted by the missionaries. The SDeaker will be Mrs. Rena Weathers Blake, a member of East Stonewall, and the first local person chosen to speak on Missionary Day. The theme of the pro gram is "Mission Outreach.” Proceeds will go to help over seas missions. A native of Charlotte, Mrs. Blake is the daughter of Mrs. Cornie Weathers and James Weathers, Sr. She is a grad uate of Second Ward High and has a degree in English from Livingstone College, Salis bury. Mrs. Blake's church activi ties include: church reporter, member, of the Pastor's Aid Board and member of Mis sionary Society No. 1. She is an occasional speaker at other churches in the area. Mrs. Blake is married to Armeaster Blake and they have two children. Purity, age three, and Arm ester Jr., two years old. The second service of the day will be at 6 p.m. and will spotlight the Buds of Promise of East Stonewall. These are the youngest missionaries of the church, ranging in age from 3 to 12. Rev.' James McCoy is pastor of East Stonewall, which is located at 1729 Griers Grove Road. Johnson, W yBe, Walker Families Gather In Catawba . Board of Directors meet ing which was originally sche duled for Thursday, Septem ber 22, has been postponed. Inez Brown was elected Lay Advisor for the Rowan Youth Fellowship dur ing a recent meeting held to make plans for a Full Rally to be held at China Grove in October. The Rowan District Youth Fellowship is made up of youths from Kings Moun tain to Salisbury. Miss Brown is a member of New Emmanuel Congrega tional United Church of Christ. Mrs. White is employed by the Mecklenburg County School System and teaches Home Economics at the Alexander Jr. High School, Huntersville. EAST STONEWALL Stewardess Board No. 2 of New East Stonewall AME Zion Church recently sponsor ed the Interdenominational Mass Choir in concert. At that time the results of a baby contest were announced. According to Rena Blake, church reporter, Mario Meeks was awarded the prize for first place, with Tiffany Hogue re ceiving second and Tosha Royster third. Willie Hudson and Armester Blake, Jr. were presented gifts for participa ting in the contest. Mrs. Lula Watson, president of Stewardess Board No. 2, reported that $1,348.00 was raised during the contest. FIRST BAPTIST The speaker for the first revival to be held in the New First Baptist Church sanctua ry will be Dr. John W. White. The revival will commence Sunday, September 25, at 7:30 p.m. and run through Friday, September 30. Dr. John W. White was born and reared in Bertie County and attended the public schools of North Carolina. He graduated from Shaw Univer sity with the following de grees: Bachelor of Arts, Bac helor of Divinity, Master of Divinity and Doctor of Divini ty. Dr. White has served for four years as Director of, Baptist Training Union of the General Baptist State Conven tion of North Carolina, six years as First Vice President of the General Baptist State Convention, and five years as President. He has served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Shaw University for seven years and is present ly a member of that Board where he has been active for 18 years. Dr. White has served as pastor of several churches in North Carolina. He is now in his 30th year at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Asheville. He is married to Ethel B. White and they have two sons, John W. Jr., Ralph D.. and one daughter, Mrs. Diane White and five grandchildren.
