Jeanne Bohn To Clyde Brown Receives John M. Murphy Award Take Look At Teenage Girls This year 10 percent of all teenage American girls will become pregnant. WSOC-TV's Jeanne Bohn takes an in-depth look at this problem as she visits Char lotte's Florence Crittenton Home for unmarried mothers and Hunter House, a facility where young adolescent mo thers are taught how to care for their babies, on this week's "Eyewitness Journal'' Sun Day, November 13 at 12:30am. Serving the Charlotte area since 1903, the Florence Crit tenton Home is one of forty others across the nation. Today it houses 65 residents, the home's full capacity. The demand for this service incre ases jevery day. The teenage birthrate among girls younger than 14 has risen in addition to the overall rate in general of adolescent mothers. Jeanne Bohn talks with Kenneth Sip es, director of Florence Crit tenton, and counselor Mary Jane Falls about these factors and the services the home offers. Ms. Bohn examines another organization helpful to the adolescent mother - Hunter House. Marion Hunter, foun der of the home and board member of Crittenton; ex plains that Hunter House gi ves young girls a chance to complete their education and make an attempt at a success ful start toward adulthood and the responsibilities of mother hood. " ' By Dianne Simpson Post Staff Writer The year 1977 is indeed another excellent year for Clyde W. Brown, the 1977 winner for the ninth time of the John M. "Boo" Murphy Award. This award was first created in 1967 in recognition of John "Boo" Murphy, one of the great supporters for the Charlotte Alumni Chapter of Johnson C. Smith University who rendered tremendous ser vices of fund raising, and securing a large number of membership. Each year this award is given to the member of the Charlotte Alumni Chapter who has surpassed all others in the fund raising drive. Brown, the 1977 recipient of this award, demonstrated this talent for the ninth time for his solicita tion of membership dues in excess of $2,000 of the $5,000 raised by the team on which he participated. Approximate ly $10,000 was raised from the entire membership drive. The John M. "Boo" Murphy Award along with a check for $100 was awarded to Clyde W. Brown by Dr. J. Matthew Murphy, son of the deceased, during the intermission period of the Annual Charlotte Alum ni Fellowship Ball held at the Charlotte Civic Center. Along with Murphy to sponsor the award was James Melvin, President of Smith's Charlotte Alumni Chapter. Three other prizes were also awarded at this event. Second prize was awarded to - Zoel Hargraves Jr., third prize to Mrs. Grace Stevenson and fourth prize to Ms. Glenda Pyant, prizes being $75, $50 and $25 respectively. Brown was reared in Char lotte. He received his A.B. degree from Smith in 1950 and his M.A. degree from Colum bia University. He has worked in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System as a classroom teacher and as an assistant principal. He was awarded the Johnson C. Smith University Distinguished Alumni Award by President Wilbert Green field in 1976. He is a member of the N.C. Association of Classroom Teachers, a member of the 6th District Graduate Chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. He is a member of the Simp son Gillespie Unted Methodist Church where he serves as a member of the choir. Brown is married to the former Elaine Taylor and they have one son. Clyde Dudley Brown who is a freshman at Johnson C. Smith Unversity. Larry lx>peiana Completes Training Course Larry Copeland has recent ly completed the Allstate Sal es Training Course which was held for two weeks at the Allstate Southern Zone head quarters in Atlanta. Georgia. Copeland is a graduate of North Carolina Central Uni versity. He has been with Allstate since July. 1971. Copeland will work ai the Sears store located at 4426 East Independence Boulevard in Charlotte.
