North Carolina has long
been known as "Basketball

there's a lot of great basket
ball being played right in our
own back yard, among the
areas' small colleges Having
been enthusiastically received
for its first two years, WBTV
feels the Carolina Classic has
become an exciting highlight
of the basketball season.

this event, WBTV's entire tele
vision staff will be utilized to
make the tournament a suc

be highly publicized, and

of technicians and equipment
to televise the Championship
game. Channel 3's Sports Di
rector, Jim Thacker, will do
the play-by-play.
The schools themselvet will
not only receive maximum
public exposure, they will also
receive an equal share of any
profits that may incur as a
result of the tournament, and
10 percent of the price of any
tickets they sell.

CHAKLIK "CARLOS" STROMAN
...Golden Bull of the Week
Carlos htroman Cited
For Outstanding Play
By Nathaniel Myers
Post Staff Writer
This weeks "Golden Bull of
the Week" is Big Charlie
"Carlos" Stroman, III of Gas
tonia, N.C.
Carlos, who wears number
81, plays Tight End and is the
kicking specialist for the Gol
den Bulls of Johnson C. Smith
University. He is 6'3" weighs
208 pounds and is a Junior
Biology major with a minor in
Chemistry. Carlos is the son of
Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Storman
II and a member of the third
Street Presbyterian Church of
Gastonia.
On last Saturday against
North Carolina Central Uni
versity, Carlos kicked two
field goals for the Golden
Bulls. One proved to be the
margin of victory in the 18-16
win for J.C. Smith. His field
goals, also his first two at
tempts this year, went for 36
and 31 yards, both in the first
half. Carlos also caught a pass
for 11 yards bringing his sea
son total to 12 receptions
Other than kicking and catch
ing, he is out there blocking
for Smith's talented running
backs.
Carlos feels morale and mo
tivation made the team come
together. "The secret is for us
to score first, we don't play
good when we fall behind.
Winning is a way of life for this
scholar, born under the sign of
Gemini who played on the 1975
4-A Championship Football
team for Gastonia's Ashbrook
High School as an Offensive
Tackle and Kicker.
When not playing football,
Carlos doubles on the swim
ming team for coach Charlie
Cox. He likes meeting people
and seeing new things. Fu
ture plans? He says Pro Foot
ball maybe. But he intends to
go to Grad School and become
an Oceanographer.
CIAA Football Roundup
Winston-Salem State Can Officially
Win CIAA Championship Saturday
Special To The Post
HAMPTON, VA...In last
week's round-up it was mis
takenly stated that Winston
Salem had clinched the 1977
C1AA Conference Champion
ship, however, the Rams must
defeat Shaw University on 12
November to win the cham
pionship. Prior to playing
Shaw the Rams are assured of
at least a tie for the champion
ship, but should they lose to
the Shaw Bears the Rams will
fall into a tie with Virginia
Union if Union beats Hampton
Institute on 19 November.
Virginia State lost all chan
ces of becoming the CIAA
champions as they were tied
by Norfolk State 21-21, and fell
one and a half game behind
conference leaders Winston
Salem State.
Both teams have only one
conference game left.
Virginia State running back
George Leonard scored two
touchdowns and rushed 23
limes for 110 yards to lead the
Trojans' offense. Leonard's
first touchdown put the Tro
jans ahead 6-0. After the first
score by the Trojans, Norfolk
State's defense tightened.
Free safety Mike Ellis, who
intercepted a pass to set up the
Spartans first score that put th
the Spartans ahead 7-6, com
pleted the game with three
interceptions, and 7 tackles, 3
unassisted. Defensive tackle
Chris Moore was Virginia Sta
te's defensive standout as he
collected one fumble, had 12
tackles which 7 were unassist
ed, and two quarterback sa
cks. Freshman defensive end
Leon Taliferro, a 6'2", 195
pound Newport News native
was also effective on defense
with 9 tackles and three quar
terback sacks. Defensive back
Layard Banks a 5Ί0", 170
pound freshman from Wash
ington, D.C. saved what could
have been the winning score
for Norfolk State tight end
Ronnie McCoy had his best
game of the season as he
grabbed six passes for 109
yards and two touchdowns.
Harrington one of the CIAA
1,000 yard rushers last season
was only able to gain 66 yards
against the stingy Trojans, but
he i^till 60 yards ahead of last
year's pace Harrington is 232
yards shy of 1,000, but has
three games left to gain the
magic number.
Virginia Union for the se
cond time this season outclas
sed a MEAC team as they
spanked Morgan State 28-9.
Union's running back Nathan
Fairley rushed 25 times for 141
yards and 2 touchdowns. On a
drizzly, muddy day sopho
more quarterback Garfield
Mizelle only threw five times
completing 3 for 28 yards and
one touchdown. Calvin Young
a 6'3", 210 pound senior line
backer from Suffolk. Va. had
14 tackles, 12 unassisted, two
quarterback sacks and broke
up two passes for the Pan
thers. Judge Thomas a CIAA
1,000 yard rusher last year
was injured in the third quar
ter and left the game with five
carries for 71 yards Thomas
has a total of 122 carries for
593 yards and three touch
downs for the season Morgan
St. was only able to gain 148
yards total offense - only 6
rushing.
Virginia Union had 409 total
offense, 394 rushing and 47
passing.
Winston-Salem running
back Timmy Newsome carri
ed the ball 19 times for 132
yards and 2 touchdowns as the
Rams downed West Virginia
State 22-7. Newsome the CIAA
rushing leader is only 92 yards
shy of 1,000. All of Newsome's
yards and scoring came in the
first quarter as he was injured
on the first play of the second
quarter and had to leave the
game wth a bruised muscle
around the shin bone. It is not
certain whether Newsonae will
see action next week against
Shaw, but he is expected to be
back before the season ends.
Dennis Bullock, Winston-Sa
lem's 6'2", 180 pound defen
sive back intercepted 2 pass
es. knocked down three other
and had 11 tackles for the
Rams' defense. Defensive gu
ard James Winbush had his
share of the Rams' glory with
23 tackles. 12 unassisted, and
three quarterback sacks. Win
ston-Salem accumulated 251
yards rushing and 68 passing
for 319 total offense.
