DISCO MIX....
Disco dee jays will be able to
do a lot of that with some of
the new long-playing 45’s now
available. ^
Among them are Roy Ayers’
“Runnin’ Away” on Polydor
Records. It has two versions...
one six and a half minutes long
with a nice xylophone inter
lude. The other version is
three and a half minutes.
0
Sergio Mendes’ THE REAL
THING, written by Stevie
Wonder, helped Mendes sell a
lot of copies of his new album.
It's now out on a long-playing
45.
n
And another long-playing
discodisc not played here of
ten is the New York Port
Authority's “I Don’t Want To
Work Today” (Ain’t That The
Truth) on Invictus Records.
That song is nice, but the
entire album which the song
originates from might be a
better buy.
It’s called THREE-THOU
SAND MILES FROM HOME.
A lot ot good jazz to tell you
about this week...From the
Newport Jazz Festival in New
York comes a live two-record
set . it’s called HERBIE HAN
COCK, VSOP, but it features
many other talented musi
cians as well. Among them:
Freddie Hubbard, Eddie Hen
derson, Tony Williams, Wayne
Shorter, and Wah Wah Wat
All of the album is worth
listening to...but the real high
lights are "Maiden Voyage,"
on side one, and “Hang Up
Your Hang Ups" on side four.
0 ,
Freddie Hubbard is also
featured on some more live
albums now out.. .these done in
Hollywood.
The name of the albums (I
say albums because there are
three of them) is the CTI
HOLLYWOOD BOWL.
In addition to Hubbard, you
hear Hubert Laws. Grover
r1
Jim Berry
Washington Jr., Airto, and
Hank Crawford.
Grover Washington Jr. is
outstanding on “Inner City
Blues” on album one.
0
George Benson’s live album
has hit the record shelves in
town. This catches him at
Carnegie Hall. It’s also avail
able on CTI Records...always
nice to hear George sings the
notes as fast as he plays them.
0
TAILGUNNER is the new
est Jazz release from Jimmy
McGriff...now playing on the
T.K, label. A very versatile
album...some of the best cuts
are “Flexible Flyers,” and
“Grandma’s Toe Jam.”
A
Acoustic pianist Gene Har
ris has delivered a winner
with his new TONE TAN
TRUM album...available on
Blue Note Records.
You’ll like his version of
Stevie Wonder's “As,” and
also “If You €an’t Find Love,
Let A Stranger Find You."
Still another good Jazz pick
is George Duke’s REACH
FOR IT, on Epic Records.
There’s no highlight oo this;
album...it’s all good. Glad to
see the number of Jazz albums
picking up again.
n
The thrid album from Brass
Construction has arrived.
Simply called BRASS CON
STRUCTION III. Best cuts are
“Get It Together,” “Happy
People,’’ and "Celebrate.’’
Caesar To Perform Here Sunday
Among the joyful and exaul
ted voices of worship in gospel
music today there are a few
whose inspirational gifts are
truly outstanding.
Mahalia Jackson is one such
name. Shirley Caesar is ano
ther. “She has given her spe
cial abilities to make the
world a better place, and her
devotion to her music is a
blessing to all who hear her,”
explained Rev. James Bar
nett.
Barnett, is promoting the
famed Ms. Ceasar in concert
Sunday afternoon at the Char
lotte Park Center, along with
such famous stars of the gos
pel music world as The South
land Singers of Patterson,
N.J., Mighty McCullough T1
ger Band of the Charlotte
House of Prayer, the Palmetto
Jubilees Singers of McCon
nells, S.C. and the Voices of
Antioch of the local Antioch
Baptist Chhrch.
The program will get under
way at 3 o’clock, and the price
of admission will be $3.50 in
advance and $4 at the door.
Barnett says tickets are on
sale at the “usual places.”
According to Barnett, Shir
ley Ann Caesar was bom to
the Rev. James and Hallie
Caesar in Durham, N.C. She
was one of 12 children. Her
father died when she was very
young and her mother was left
to raise the family alone.
During the years of struggle,
Shirley was guided by her
natural feeling for gospel mu
sic and her strong belief in
God,” Barnett explained.
Barnett continued, “the sup
porting depth of feeling which
I
SHIRLEY CAESAR
...Spreads important message
amreiy ana ner singers bring
to gospel music is a stirring
and powerful force. The emo
tion she captures rings out
with real sincerity.”
An evangelist, Ms. Caesar
runs her own gospel enter
prises, which co-ordinates a
huge annual crusade and a

Presently she is heard re
gularly over two radio stations
in North Carolina and she is
quickly becoming one of the
most respected names in gos
pel music, a singer dedicated
to spreading an important
message to people every
where, Barnett concluded.
