Charlotte Chapter Of NSLEA Sponsors Police Ball By Cynthia Bel] Post Staff Writer The Third Annual Police ball was held recently at the Charlotte Civic Center. The ball was sponsored by the Charlotte Chapter of the North State Law Enforcement Asso ciation. This association in cludes anyone in the criminal justice system in the Charlotte area. The Charlotte chapter was formed in 1970 and is fairly new whereas the state Associ ation was founded 25 years ago in Durham, North Caro lina. There are 35 members pre sently in the Charlotte Chap ter according to president Tracy Barrett. Effective lead ership of The North State Law Enforcement Association is projected through its hard working officers and mem bers. President Barrett is as sisted by Wesley Everett, Vice President; Leo Johnson, Sec retary; W.A. McCullough, Fi nancial Secretary; and Curby Swiddel, Treasurer. iiua year s uan was piannea by the Program Committee with James Whitesize as Chairperson. Other members of the association who assisted with planning the ball were W. Caldwell, Frank Coley, Fran cis Dixon, James Hooper, Al phonso Green, and A.D. Croc kett. The program committee gave away fabulous door pri zes at the ball. First prize was a 19” color television set, $100 cash was second, and $50 was third place. Charles Dannelly, a candidate for the Charlotte City Council District No. 2 seat was present and gave re marks. Human Boold from Winston-Salem, North Caro lina provided the musical en tertainment. Other Committees of the Charlotte Chapter of the North State Law Enforcement Asso ciation are the Wages and Means and Program Commit tee which is a consolidation of the Wages and Means Com mittee and the Program Com mittee. This consolidated committee handles social functions and discover new ways of raising money. The membership Committee in vestigates new applicants and tries to recruit new members. The Courtesy Committee wel comes visitors and sends flo : were to members to cheer 'them in times of sickness or death. The Liaison Committee ■ •• 1WZTZIERS OF CHARLOTTE CHAPTER OF —!\orth State Late Enforcement Association represents the North State Law Enforcement Association whenever they are brought before the Charlotte Police Department Liaison Commit tee. The Public Relations Committee makes certain that communications are esta blished and maintained be tween North State and the community. The Convention Committee plans for their an nual convention held in June. The Constitutional Committee makes sure that North State is acting within the bounds of their constitutionTThe Legal Committee is active in defend ing North State in the court room. They filed a Discrimi natory Class A Suit in 1974 for discriminatory practices in hiring and reached an out of court settlement that a certain English Hosts Washington Heights Club The Washington Heights Garden Club held its regular meeting at the home of Mrs. Nancy English on Orvis Street. Members present at the meeting were Mrs. Lois Scott, Mrs. Maude Smalls, Mrs. Carrie Pitts, Mrs. Lillie M. Carter, Mrs. Pearl Phil lips, Mrs. Jesse Hamlin, Mrs. Willett Patterson, Mrs. Cora Gaithw^Mre^Jannie^ride^ Mrs. Ethel Choate, Mrs. t^ssie M. Stovell, Mrs. Nancy En glish and Mrs. Viola Allison. President for the club is Mrs. Scott and secretary is Mrs. Choate. Mrs. Scott opened the meet ing by singing “Silent Night’ and “Joy To The World,” after which Mrs. Allison said a prayer. The club plans to bring gifts for secret pals to the Decern ber meeting. Members contri buted money to a weight rally they had previously planned. Other activities will include a Christmas party for hostesses that served a lovely repass. The party will be held on December 21 at the communi ty center. The Garden Club next meeting will be held at the home of Mrs. Arlena Ga briel. percentage of blacks will be hired until they represent 20 percent of the population, and promotion of blacks by a given percentage The Legal Com mittee makes sure that this is happening. The North State Law En forcement Association has been involved in several pro jects during the year. They have provided security for the Festival in the Park, given Thanksgiving baskets to the elderly, donated to the WGIV Mountain of Food, donated toys to children at Christmas time, contributed to the Mar tin Luther King statue fund, held two circus’ for the child ren in the Charlotte area, and hosted their convention in June. This year The North State Law Enforcement Association will give $500 to a man with a family that is trying to further his education. This award will be presented at their annual Christmal party on the 23rd of December. LU Is Accepting Resumes For The Presidency The A&M Board of Regents is now accepting resumes or applications from any person who is interested in being considered for the presidency of Langston University. Lang ston University is located a bout 45 miles north of Okla homa City. Langston Univer sity is a four-year institution with a current enrollment of about 1,000 students. Any person desiring infor mation concerning this posi tion should write to the A&M Board of Regents whose office is Room 452, Oliver Hodge Building, Oklahoma City, Ok lahoma 73106. Inc. presents plaque to Mrs. Iwo Sorors Awarded Plaques* At Founder’s Day Celebration Last week-end was indeed a most joyful and memorable time when two sorors were awarded plaques at the Foun ders Day Celebration of the Beta Omicron Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorori ty, Inc. The presentation was made at a dinner during the first part of the celebration which was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Garfield Conner of 1615 Oaklawn Avenue. The dinner was proceeded by a brief business meeting which was opened with a reading, “Understanding" by Mrs. Geraldine Taylor, fol lowed by the history of Sigma , Gamma Rho Sorority and Be ta Omicron Sigma Chapter by Ms. Jo Ann Sheff. A very impressive and inspirational prayer was then led by Mrs. Mattie Green. The first plaque was award ed to Mrs. Mattie Green, who once served as Historian and Parliamentarian in the sorori ty, but presently serves as chairperson of the Community Service Committee. She was awarded by Mrs. Smot for her great group leadership and outstanding community ser vice. The second plaque was a warded to Mrs. Lavenia You ng b> Mrs. Mary S. McKinnon (presider of the meeting), for 25 years of loyal and dedicated service. Mrs. Young first join ed the Sorority during the 1952-53 sorority year, and has been actively involved since that time. She has served as president, secretary and chairperson of the program committee and has served in many other capacities of the Sorority. During the time she was president she initiated the sorority in becoming a life member fo the NAACP. This year the Sorority received its Life Membership Plaque as Mrs. Young was being honor ed.
