Monday; Dec. 19 WSOC-TV To Colorcast “Wilma” Shirley Jo Finney, an ac tress who was voted “best athlete” during her junior high school track career, stars as Wilma Rudolph in “Wil ma,” a fact-based drama a bout the early career of the 1960 tnple Olympic gold me dal wiuier. The special will be colorcast Monday, December 19 at 9 p.m. on Channel Nine. Emmy winner Cicely Tyson (“The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman”) also stars - as Biancne, wuma s mouier. Finney, who looked to Ru dolph as her childhood idol, portrays the track star as the teen-ager from Clarksville, Tennessee, who overcame physical handicaps to become a successful sprint runner. After several years wearing a leg brace following nume rous childhood illnesses, Wil- . ma perseveres with her mo- ( ther’s encouragement and ( progresses significantly to- | ward a more normal life. With j tier father s blessing, she en ters a summer track program at Tennessee State University. There, she meets Coach Ed Temple, a pioneer in girls' track and field who guides her to a position on the 1965 Olympic team; she wins a bronze medal in the 100-meter relay. wuma s plans to compete four years later hit a snag -- she becomes pregnant and give birth to a daughter in 1968 Backed by her mother and Coach Temple, she con vinces her father to let her accept a scholarship and con tinue to train for the Olym pics. The Many Sides Of Black Music “The Many Sides of Black Music,” an innovative musi cal program kit aimed at inner-city school pupils, is now available nationally from Car nation Company, it was an nounced recently by J. Ed ward Atkinson, company ma nager of Urban Relations. Each kit consists of five records (10 sides) packaged in an attractive four-color al bum, along with a 16-page “Lesson Guide,” eight—stu dents tests and a 24” x 36” poster. These are available to accredited music depart ments of qualifying schools by writing to The Many Sides of Black Music, P.O. Box 1030, South Holland, IL 60473. There is a present $1.50 mailing charge. Atkinson said, “This pro gram is an invaluable teach ing tool which explains not only how contemporary black music evolved but, moreover, serves as a practical basis for teaching musical composition, technique and appreciation to young students. This program had its genesis over three years ago. In 1974, Dr. Flor ence Crim Robinson, chair man of the music department at Clark College in Atlanta, Georgia, hosted a national five*minute radio show spon l sored Dy carnation, ine Ma ny Sides of Black Music." This was broadcast three times weekly on black radio stations throughout the U.S. “From this beginning radio show, which highlighted the role of music in black culture from evolutionary to contem porary, we were able to deve lop this kit which Carnation is now making available to scho ol music departments throughout the United States. Presently, we are concentrat ing on the numerous inner-city schools nationally." Famous contemporary re cording artists present the 43 lessons on records. These les sons are divided into eight units for the course. The first four units - “Rhy thm”; “Melody”; “Harmo ny”; and “Tone Color” - exa mine the basic elements com mon to all music composi tions.
