inner-city school pupils, is now

nounced recently by J. Ed
ward Atkinson, company ma
nager of Urban Relations.
Each kit consists of five
records (10 sides) packaged in

“Lesson Guide,” eight—stu
dents tests and a 24” x 36”
poster. These are available to
accredited music depart
ments of qualifying schools by
writing to The Many Sides of
Black Music, P.O. Box 1030,
South Holland, IL 60473. There
is a present $1.50 mailing
charge.
Atkinson said, “This pro
gram is an invaluable teach
ing tool which explains not
only how contemporary black
music evolved but, moreover,
serves as a practical basis for
teaching musical composition,
technique and appreciation to
young students. This program
had its genesis over three
years ago. In 1974, Dr. Flor
ence Crim Robinson, chair
man of the music department
at Clark College in Atlanta,
Georgia, hosted a national
five*minute radio show spon
l
sored Dy carnation, ine Ma
ny Sides of Black Music." This
was broadcast three times
weekly on black radio stations
throughout the U.S.
“From this beginning radio
show, which highlighted the
role of music in black culture
from evolutionary to contem
porary, we were able to deve
lop this kit which Carnation is
now making available to scho
ol music departments
throughout the United States.
Presently, we are concentrat
ing on the numerous inner-city
schools nationally."
Famous contemporary re
cording artists present the 43
lessons on records. These les
sons are divided into eight
units for the course.
The first four units - “Rhy
thm”; “Melody”; “Harmo
ny”; and “Tone Color” - exa
mine the basic elements com
mon to all music composi
tions. Units Five and Six cover
“Form” and “Style,” the ele
ments which contribute to the
distinctive sound of individual
music selections.
“The Many Sides of Black
Music” continues Carnation's
generations-old policy of so
cial responsibility involve
