Daniel "Chappie” Ja mes Jr., 57, the nation's only black 4-star general, has re portedly turned down an offer by the Democratic Party in his home state of Florida to run for lieutenant governor when he retires in 1978. *+- + -+- _ The Mecklenbp-g Board of County Commissioners voted last week for the second time to withhold action on a funding request from the Charlotte Area Fund. CAF asked the Commission for $40,000 in Oc tober to help meet its local matching needs in order to qualify for the 60 percent funding it receives from the Federal Community Services Administration. At the same meeting, Com missioner Bob Walton expres sed concern over whether Sam Kornegay can effectively con tinue to function as CAF direc- ' tor. Walton said, “It is com monly known that there is some problem in perhaps your direction of this agency.” + + + The U.S. Dept, of Labor has eliminated 1,100 of what it called “nit-picking" job-safe ty regulations from the Occu pational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) that have proven to be of little value in protecting workers' health and safety. Holderman told his audience of 1,500 we need to follow new “creative pathways...to meet the di mensions of a markedly dif ferent future.” -1_ l In a keynote speech to the 1,400 delegates attending the AFL-CIO’s annual convention in Los Angeles last week, George Meany, the labor fede ration's 83-year old president called upon President Carter to push for massive federal programs to help create 16 million jobs within the next four years. + + + Norwood McMillan, 32, di rector of campus security (po lice) of AAT State University has reportedly been charged with selling marijuana based on evidence provided by one of his own security officers. + *f + Eight predominately black colleges and universities, in cluding Shaw University, have received federal grants to/de velop programs to train more blacks for careers in the crim inal justice field A consortium arrangement between the 8 institutions is aimed at the development of 4 year programs leading to bachelor's degrees in criminal justice areas. Blacks current Hoyle Martin Sr. ly comprise only 4 percent of the criminal justice profes sion. 4* + + Comeida Davidson Lovell, a graduate of JCSU, was recent ly named “Who’s Who in Health Care in America.” She is director of a Newark, N.J. day care center. + + + Karen Fanner, a Detroit real estate saleswoman, has become the first known black member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) as a result of having traced her ancestry to a white Revolutionary War soldier. “I didn’t join the DAR as a block-busting gesture, be cause I’m black and the orga nization is white. I joined be cause it was the logical con clusion to the line of research I was following.” Research begun in early 1976 revealed to Mrs. Farmer that a maternal great-grand mother, Jennie Weaver, was a white woman from Penn, who was married to a black man , from Cleveland, Ohio. The DAR has long been known for its conservative viewpoints and racist attitude toward blacks. • + + + , In a beginning attempt to broaden its base and attract blacks and other minority groups, Bill Brock, Republi can Party national chairman, told the Southern Republican « Conference meeting in Florida late last month, “We’ve got to « have blacks in this party. We can't survive without that con stituency.” r ---- Fat Albert Christmas - Special Will Be Seen Here Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids celebrate the Christmas season in a series of adven tures reminiscent of one of the oldest stories in the world - the chronicle of the nativity — in “The Fat Albert Christmas Special,” an animated half hour holiday special to be broadcast Sunday, December 18, at 7 p.m. on WBTV, Chan nel 3. It’s Christmas, and Fat Al bert and his pals (Bill, Rus sell, Rudy, Weird Harold, Dumb Donald, Mushmouth and the rest of the gang) are faced with the imminent des truction of their ramshackle clubhouse by the owner of the property, mean old Tyrone. Another crisis awaits them when a young stranger named Morcholl A1_ -—uiv darkness pleading for help for his unemployed father and pregnant mother who are stranded in their disabled car in the snow. These crises move the Cos by Kids to action, and just like the Christmas story, a child is born - this one in a clubhouse. And the clubhouse itself is saved when a new understand ing dawns on the Cosby Kids and Tyrone himself when they realize that Tyrone, a widower Maude Celebrates ’Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house was chaos. Maude’s holiday celebration seems to be turning out quite different ly than she planned, on “Mau de,” December 19 at 9 p.m. on WBTV, Channel 3.
