Dr. Koontz Gets
State’s Highest
Award
Dr. Elizabeth D. Koontz and
Reginald G. Mitchiner were
among four North Carolinians
who received the state's high
est awards in recent state
ceremonies before an audien
I ce of 458 fellow citizens.
The ceremony, marked the
64th annual Culture Week
when 12 state literary, music,
art and preservation groups
meet and honor people in their
fields.
Dr. Koontz, assistant super
intendent for North Carolina
Public Instruction, received
the public service award for
her leadership in education
and women affairs. She was
the first black president of the
National Education Associa
tion and last year received the
College Entrance Examina
tion Board’s medal for distin
guished service to education;
directed the Women’s Bureau
of the U.S. Department of
Labor and was U.S. delegate
to the United Nation’s Com
mission in the Status of Wo
men.
Dr. Koontz was also state
chairman of the International
Women’s Year Coordinating
Committee and a member of
the state delegation to the
National Women’s Conference
held recently in Houston. She
is a native of Salisbury.
Mitchiner received the sci
ence award for his contribu
tion to engineering and teach
ing. He is chairman of the
mechanical engineering de
partment at
Agricultural
— State Un |
boro, ana respected for_,
work in machine design and
instruction. Mitchiner was
reared in Durham and worked
at IBM before joining the staff
at A&T.
Hood Singers
The Hood Memorial Gospel
Singers will appear in concert
on Christmas Eve at 6:30 p.m.
This concert is their Annual
Christmas Concert and is en
titled "A Christmas Eve With
Music.”
The concert will feature
several guest soloists and mu
sic will range from the con
temporary Christmas Carols
to Gospel Selections arranged
by such artists as James
Cleveland, Myma Summers,
Andrae Crouch, Walter Haw
kins and many more.
The concert will be held at
the Hood Memorial AME Zion
Church located at the corner
of Sacco and Todd Streets in
Belmont.
All are invited to attend.
