BILL JOHNSON
THE WAY IT LOOKS TO ME.
This is the time of the year when all should be
merry and full of good cheers...and eggnogg!
This reporter is going out on the proverbial
limb to pick the Dallas Cowboys to win the Super
Bowl next month and become the king of
professional football. The way I figure it, the
Cowboys have had their low moments and are
not playing well at the moment. They, however,
should pick themselves up to the level of play
that projected them as the best team in all of
football during the young d*iys of' the current
season.
Another reason I like Dallas is its stingy
defense...And the knowledgeable people in the
game will readily tell you that defense is where
iv” at in the world of football.
SUDDEN THOUGHT - The end of the world
will probably catch most of us promising to do
better.
Did you notice that the second Gold Bowl
attracted a little over 100 percent more specta
tors than the year before? It would appear that
Bob Moorman and the MEAC officials have a
good thing in the making.
Robert Week, the great Winston-Salem State
football player who makes his home here, has
been named to the All-CIAA Academic Team.
NBC’s story on Wilma Rudolph should be
interesting. The true story of the young black
woman who captured three Olympic gold medals
in 1960 as the fastest woman runner in the world
will be seen Monday night, beginning at 9 on
WSOC-TV.
List this reporter among those who will be
rooting for Walter Payton to accumulate 200 or
more yards Sunday afternoon. The flashy
Chicago Bears runningback needs 199 yards to
tie O.J. Simpson’s record for the most yards
rushing in a single season.
Did you know that becoming wiser today is a
mixed blessing? It causes a person to realize
what a fool he was yesterday.
Lew Massey was shooting a redhot .548 from
the floor in the first four UNCC baskeball games.
The hotshot Pineville native is also leading the
49ers in steals (12), he’s second in rebounding
and fifth in assists.
A couple of Charlotte natives are doing well on
the basketball courts. Everett Fulson, a fierce
rebounder, is starring with Lomax Hannon in
Alabama and Edward Roper is enjoying a
banner season at North Carolina Central in
Durham.
Harvey Heartley, who is bringing his St.
Augustine’s Falcons here this weekend to
compete in the annual Tip-Off Basketball Tour
nament, has a life-time coaching record that
includes 364 victories and 139 defeats.
Insurance executive Willie A. Walker, who is
doing the PR work for the Tip-Off Tournament,
reports tickets are “going briskly.”
“This should be a great tournament,” Walker
informed, adding, “the teams are evenly match
ed and everyone is aware that St. Augustine’s,
Smith and Barber-Scotia can score with the best.
There has been no report on the Allen team.
Walker’s committee has planned “an exciting
halftime show for both nights.” The highlights
will be the Pershinette, popular drill team from
St. Augustine’s and the crowning of "Miss
Tip-Off.” According to Walker, the Pershinette
will perform both nights, but the crowning of
“H0ss Tip-Off will take place Saturday night.
MEDALIST HONOR -- Charlotte native Douglas Grier of the
South Carolina State College golf team displays the first
place individual trophy he earned in leading his team to a
three-stroke victory in the recent NAIA District Six golf
tournament held at Myrtle Beach. Grier had a 146 two day
total to take top honors. S.C. State totaled 607 as a team to
edge College of Charleston who finished with 610. The match
was the last of a four-match fall schedule for the Bulldogs
who begin their spring campaign in March

Anderson was earlier nam

The 6-3, 215 pound senior,
one of the top running backs in
small colleges this season,
was chosen as part of a
four-man backfield. He will be
joined by quarterback Mike
Reiker of Lehigh, New Hamp
shire running back William
Burnham and Steve Powell of
Northeast Lou Oklahoma.
A native of Kingsland, Geor
gia, Anderson was one of only
two players named to the
squad from predominately
Black colleges. Cornelius
Washington of Winston-Salem
State, whose team lost a 10-7
decision to £ C. State in the
recent Gold Bowl, made the
team as a defensive back.
The big fullback rushed for
1284 yards and 19 touchdowns
to lead the Bulldogs to a 9-1-1
record, including the Gold
Bowl triumph. He became the
first player in S.C. State histo
ry to gain a 1000 yards for the
season
