Selma Burke Renown sculptor Selma Burke Displays 11 Sculptures North Carolina native Sel ma Burke, creator of the likeness used on the Roosevelt dime, displays eleven exam ples of her figurative ^bulp ture at the N.C. Museum of Art’s Mary Duke Biddle Gal lery for the Blind beginning Dec. 18. This nationally recognized sculptor has been selected to execute the Mar Luther King Jr. Memoru Statue planned for Marshal Park and was in Charlotte earlier this year to look at the site where it will stand. It is hoped the statue fund drive, headed by Rev. James Barnett, will suc cessfully culminate on or a bout January 15, the 49the anniversary of Dr. King’s bir th. rmiiuugii miss rjurne s ca reer as an artist and teacher spans four decades, her first academic training was in nur sing. As a nurse-companion to a prosperous New York pat ron, she received encourage ment to develop her talent and interest in sculpture. In New York the artist studied at Cooper Union, Sarah Law rence College and Columbia University where she received her Masters of Fine Arts in 1941. Selma Burke was the recipi ent of several fellowships whi ch allowed her to study a broad. While in Paris she studied with the contempora ry French master Aristide Maillol (1861-1944)^. and her work is evocative bf Maillol's influence. Through her research of the possibilities offered sculptors by native stone, conducted in the late 1930s, American sculptors were encouraged to lessen their dependency on imported materials which we *CAUUdlVCiy a l that time. Miss Burke has extended the encouragement she re ceived early in her career to many young artiste, principal ly through the formation of the Selma Burke School of Sculp ture in New York and the Selma Burke Art Center in Pittsburgh. The latter was funded by the Carnegie Mellon Institute. She had a one-man exhibition of her work at the Carnegie Museum in 1975. The sculptor’s abilities as a teacher, artist and adminis trator were recognized by Pennsylvania’s Governor Scranton in his appointment of Miss Burke to the Pennsylvan ia~ Councilor the Arts. She ^served as a council member for 10 years under three conse cutive administrations. “The Sculpture of Selma Burke” continues at the N.C. Museum of Art’s Mary Duke Biddle Gallery for the Blind through Jan. 22, 1978. The museum is open Tuesdays through Saturdays, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.; Sundays, 2 - 6 p.m.; and admission is free. The York Road Landfill will be open from 7 a m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 19 - 22 and until 1 p.m. Dec. 23. It will be closed Saturday, Dec 24 The animal Control Depart ment located at 2700 Toomey Ave will remain open on Friday.
