1Ν\Έ"ΓΓΜΚΥΓ DEOSONS By Bernie Johnson • E F Hutton A Company Account Executive Bet ie Johaat_ Why People Buy And Sell Call Options nuying call options offers many investors exactly what they are looking for: A poten tially large profit from a relatively small investment with a known and predeter mined risk. The buyer of a call option knows in advance that the most he can lose is the price he has paid for the option. Selling - or "writing" · call options offers other investors exactly what they are looking for: An opportunity to increa se - often substantially - the income derived from their securities investments. ^Still other investors are at tracted to options as a way to establish today the price they will pay for stock six or nine months from now; for the opportunity they provide to diversify; and for the protec tion they offer against a possi ble decline in the market value of owned securities. As will become clear with an understanding of the funda mentals of call options, an individual may choose to be either a buyer or a writer of call options, depending on his analysis of market prospects and his financial objectives at a particular time At one noint in time, he may elect to buy call options, and at another point in time to write them. This is not to suggest that options trading is a suitable investment for everyone, ei ther as a buyer or writer of options. It clearly is not. No one form of investment is likely to suit every investment objective Furthermore, op tions trading has risks and limitations that should be carefully weighed against the potential rewards. For the individual seeking new and more flexible invest ment strategies, however, call options offer a variety of ways to achieve a variety of finan cial goals, ranging from some that are highly speculative to others that are highly conser vative. An Option Clearing Corpo ration Prospectus is available from Ε F. Hutton and Com pany and is essential reading prior to effecting any option transaction. Tax consequen ces of any option transaction can be complicated and should be checked carefully with one's own tax advisor prior to lfntation.
