IWttfcl Campus Capers For you Campus Capers readers I would like to intro duce to you just one of the many outstanding students of the Johnson C. Smith Univer sity family. This young gentle man is Larry Thomas Smith, a senior English major from Bennetts ville, S.C. Smith came to the Universi ty with great intentions of obtaining an opportunity to- - grow both spiritually and aca demically in an environment with those whose habits and customs be was accustomed to. What were the results of his intentions? Well, be has been quite successful and his inspi rational qualities are well ac claimed. Smith's resplendent imagi nation and great cognizance has stimulated for him the skill of outstanding talent for writing. He loves writing poe try and has produced some that have the quality of thoee written by Langs too Hughes, Nikki Giovanni and William Shakespeare all wrapped in one. He loves acting as well. At the University, Smith is a - member of the Alpha Chi Honor Society, the University Concert Choir, the R.W. John son Spiritual Choir, president of Sigma Tau Delta National English Honor Society, past editor of the TREEWELL, and editor-in-chief of the golden anniversary issue of the BULL. DeGranville Burke un der the sponsorship of the Afro American Cultural and Ser vice Center, will be given at several area churches during this month as part of the observance of February as "Black Awareness Month." These presentations are op en to the public and everyone is urged to attend. On Sunday, February 12, the show will be presented at New Emmanuel Congregational Christian Church of God in Christ. 3540 Beatties Ford Road, at 6:30 p.m. Rev. N.C. Smith feels that he has gained from the Universty a self awareness, as well as "an awareness of many people that I could not have obtained that I attended an all white university or even another black school, because JCSU is unique within itself." As for Smith's endless suc cesses in life and especially here at the University, be feels that he owes much gratitude for having the presence of Christ in his life. He affirmed, "I have come to realize that the love of God in one's heart can motivate one to do and be anything that be wants to, plus an intense desire to be more than I am and all that I can be." Nikki Giovanni To Appear Here ay ueora aianiey Post Staff Writer Nikki Giovanni, The Prin cess of Black Poetry, will appear at UNCC Thursday, February 16 for a lecture-pœ a reading in observance of ck History Month. The lec ture will be held at 8 p.m. in the McKnight Lecture Hall on the UNC-Charlotte campus. Ms. Giovanni was bom in Knoxville. Tennessee, raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, and at tended Fisk University in the 1960's. She graduated with honors in history from Fisk in 1967. After graduation, she was awarded a grant from the Ford Foundation and publish ed her first book of poetry, BLACK FEELING, BLACK TALK. Some of those include six Honorary Doctorate de grees (five in literature, the other in humanities), 1972, Woman of the Year - Youth Leadership Award from the LADIES HOME JOURNAL Magazine, a Meritorious Pla que for Service from the Cook County Jail, and Life Mem bership and Scroll from the National Council of Negro Wo men, to name a few. In her expression of the way she feels, taken from her album THE WAY I FEEL, Nikki has said, "People today are generally lonely and a fraid. One of the responsibili ties of the artist is to soothe that passage from irresponsi bility to responsibility - from life to rebirth. Love is a touchstone to bend the road - to grand life's mountains - to spark the soul. That's really THE WAY I FEEL." The program featuring Nik ki is open to the public and there is no admission. Hogewood Wine Ray Reeve Award WSOC-TVs Mike Hogewood bas received the 1977 Ray Reeve Award for Non-Net work Television's Sportscas ter of the Year. Recognizing service to the community through sports broadcasting, the award is given by the North Carolina Association of Sports Broadcaster·. NBC-TV broadcaster and anchor of Washington's WRC sports desk, Jim Simpson jud ged the 1977 competition. Hogewood is the second win ner from the station within a three-year period - Channel Nine Sports Director Bob Hk* was the 1975 award recipient. A Greensboro native, Mike Hogewood is a 1976 graduate of Lenoir Rfayne College. He bagui makiug for Channel Nine while in school and as sumed his present full-time job as sports-news reporter upon graduation.
