An architectural sculpture of three pyramids in graduat ed heights of 16 feet, 23 feet and 30 feet will be moved to different uptown locations each day to draw attention to the festival. The design by architect Frank Blanton is based on the architectural theme of the Charlotte Civic Center where many Festival '78 events will Lake place. The triangular bases of the pyramids are 21 feet, 28 feet and 35 feet on each edge, respectively. The surface oi the pyramids will be fabric .supported by a metal frame work. The sculpture is scheduled to be on various blocks of N. Try on St. for four days and on W. Trade St. one day. Then it will make one-day stops at the Thompson Orphanage Chapel, the Civic Center, Fourth Ward, the Hall of Justice and Marshall Park. Councilman Milton Short, a member of the Festival Steer ing Committee, said, "The ASC Festival greatly adds to the Charlotte image as a festival city. Charlotte repre sents many good things and we have lots of good images. This celebration will heighten our image as a festival city." Blantoo designed the pyra mids for ASC, as a representa tive of the local chapter of the American Institute of Archi tects. A team of professional engineers from the communi ty is doing the structural design. The fabric is being con structed by Tracy Barnes of Ballon Works, Inc. in States ville. Jim McElduff of Inter national Steel Erectors, Inc. will assist in rigging the frame. The Spirit Graphics from Spirit Square, directed by Gaines Brown, will move and maintain the sculpture during the festival. The plan was developed in consultation with members of the City of Charlotte staff including personnel from the City Manager's office, Depart ment of Public Works, Traffic Engineering Department, Charlotte Mecklenburg Plan ning Commission, Charlotte Transit Authority, Charlotte Mecklenburg Insurance Advi sory Committee, Charlotte Po lice and Charlotte Fire De partment.
