>41 Campus Capers I Last week with its constant ' changes of the climatic condi tions of the Easter Holiday was spring break here at Smith. For many Smith stu dents it was a time for vaca tioning, fun and games, and for others a continuation pe riod of work and studies. But for the members of the JCSU University Choir it was an engrossed time of travel and concerts. The 45-member JCSU Uni versity Choir, under the gui dance of Music Director Chris topher W. Kemp, expedited during the spring break for their annual spring tour which eventuated March 18 - 23. This tour with its many concerts was made possible through the various offices of the Jlsu s Alumni chapters. This group with its forma tion of melodic voices of sheer elegance and pulchritude in tricated their audiences as they performed concerts con sisting of both secular and sacred, and then all sacred selections. Leaving the campus on Fri day, March 17, the University Choir made their first stop in Richmond, Va. where they rendered selections at the First United Presbyterian Church. Then traveling farther north and terminating for a two-day visit the choir performed in Washington, D.C. Their Sun day, March 19th performance was held at the Northeastern Presbyterian Church. Then on Monday, March 20th they we re engaged with their concerts at the Woodson Senior High School, the Martin Luther King Jr. Library and an even ing presentation at the Ru dolph Elem. School.' On Tuesday, March 21 their beautiful voices were heard even farther north as they made a presentation at the Durham AME Zion Church in Bay Shore, N.Y. iDeir New York visit con tinued until Wednesday, Mar ch 22 as the choir held con certs at the King-Straight Path School in Wyandanch, the Wyandanch High School in Wyandanch and the Bethel AME Zion Church in Freeport. The choir received a perpe tuation of standing ovations from all concerts-rendered. Accompanying the choir were faculty advisor Odessa Rose borough, the Instrumental En semble and accompanists Ka ren Washington and Beverly Jackson. The University Choir will continue its spring tour as it will make appearances in San ford, N.C. on Sunday, April 16 and in Shelby, N.C. on Sunday, April 30. It will perform in joint concert with Queens Col lege, Davidson College and UNC-Charlotte at the Myers Park Baptist Church here in Charlotte the first part of May, and will present their spring concert on Sunday, May 7 at the University Chur ch on the JCSU campus. - Benny Goodman To Appear On jf WBTV Musical V ariety fecial Mltxi Gaynor, with the help of guest stars Benny Good man, Gavin Mcleod and John McCook, explores a wide ran ge of contemporary trends in the aptly titled “Mitzi... What’s Hot, What’s Not,” an hour-long musical-variety special to be broadcast on Thursday .April 6, at 9 p.m. on WBTV, Channel 3. Benny Goodman, the leg erf dary “King of Swing,” joins Miss Gaynor in tracing the evolution of the discotheque, one of the “hot” items on the contemporary scene. Then, the famed clarinetist, who brought jazz to New York’s Carnegie Hall 40 years ago ».. and Helped make that musical form popular in this country and throughout the world, joins Ms septet, including renowned trumpet player Jack Sheldon (who appeared on the network in Ms own series “Run Buddy Run”) in a musical standard of that time. • ' Gavin McLeod who appea red as news writer Murray Slaughter on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show1’ and who is now the star of the television series “Love Boat,” assists Miss Gaynor in a words-and-music exploration of what’s “hot” among the different age gro ups in our society today. And in a comedy vein, John ^ JlcCook^ta^^to^Network daytime series “The Young and the Restless,*’ will be Miss Gaynor’s very own special consultant in a musical app raisal of television soap ope ras. Featured dance numbers for Miss Gaynor include a tribute to the ever-changing world of fashion, a history of the dance, and a highlight of the touring treasures of King TUL ...Children off to college?
