The Detroit Emeralds, one of the Motor City’s vocal groups, returned to the studio last year after a three year break from the recording scene. Their return was just in time to put their FEEL THE NEED LP in the premiere set of Westbound releases to come under the newly associated Atlantic distribution West bound officials felt that this was only fitting since the Emeralds was the very first to sign under the label when Westbound was being distri buted independently by Ar men Boladian. Since their initial signing with Westbound, the Detroit Emeralds yielded a two sided hit, "If I Lose Your Love" and “I Bet You Get The One Who l>oves You,” from their DO ME RIGHT LP, to get them going in the recording indus try. The release of FEEL THE NEED last year illustrated the appeal that the Emeralds have had for their millions of fans throughout the years. The song “Feel The Need" was first heard as a single from their second LP, YOU WANT IT, YOU GOT IT. Damon Shave’s version of this song took off ahead of the Emeralds on the charts. But John Abbey, editor of BLUES & SOUL magazine from England, urg ed the release of the tune in the United Kingdom He was already familiar with their work through the release of their “Do Me Right," single from their debut album of the same title. The song was released in the United King dom and became a smashing success there and became a gold seller for the group. John Abbey telephoned the Emeralds one night from En gland while they were per forming at the Apollo in New York. His enthusiam over their serftational success in his country inspired the group to visit Britain for the first time in 1972. During the course of their stay, the Emeralds toured the ballroom circuit as headliners only to return to perform in Italy, Greece. Spain, Ireland, and Germany The results of this tour was so grand that the Detroit Eme ralds decided that their bian nual tour of the Continent was an important part of their performance schedule With the release of their FEEL THE NEED LP that was recorded exclusively in Memphis including a rework ed version of the title tune, the Emeralds set the stage for their latest album LET’S GET TOGETHER. This new album finds the group shifting to their home base of Detroit for the recording of six of the eight tracks of the album They are backed up by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra along with 15 other expert players. Tunes to listen for on this new LP are "Treat Her Like A Lady," “Have A Good Day," and "Traveling Man.” Abrim Tilmon, Jr., his bro ther Ivory, and James Mit chell make up the Detroit Emeralds with Marvin Willis to round out performances on the road Abe and Ivory Tilmon were both born in Little Rock Ark aasas, whereas James Mil chell is a native of Florida They were all, however, brou ght upin"Black Bottom," for mally called Detroit's East Side.
