SOUL SOUNDS
PIECES is the latest from
Bobby Womack, on CBS Re
cords. Womack has been quiet
lately ou both the concert tour
and in the recording studio...
but his return is strong.
Womack is accompanied by
Michael Henderson on bass on
a couple of songs, unfortunate
ly, Henderson doesn't do any
singing.
However, Candi Staton
does...and the Horny Horns
are also there to chip in.
Strongest cuts on the album
are "It’s Party Time,” “Wind
It Up," and “Stop Before We
Start."
The Godfather of Soul...
James Brown...is back, trying
to pick up on the latest dance
craze.
Brown's latest LP, called
JAM 1980, features a new cut
called “The Spank”.
This is really the best album
Brown has had in a while...but
it still may not be enough to
convince many that the God
father...isn't becoming the
Grandfather of Soul.
The album is on Polydor
Records...and it has another
danceable cut called "Jam "
Another familiar face...
Smokey Robinson ...has a new
LP on the shelves...he calls it
LOVE BREEZE, on Tamla
Records.
Smokey makes albums
more for pleasure than out of
necessity now ..and some
times, it seems more effort
could have been put into them
Tltose of us who are used to
hearing Smokey sing slow,
love ballads will appreciate a
couple of the songs on this
album.
speed it up ..and jazz it up...he
falls flat. Album highlights
include "Love So Fine," and
Trying It Again."
Oood guitar backup on the
album from Wah Wah Wataon.
Eddie Fisher's debut LP,
HOT Ll,'Nt'H...is worth hear
ing. Fisher is another whose
voice is suited for sitting
mellow songs. He does a good
job «n ' Brain Strain," and
Energy '
This album, which has a
ver> interesting cover, is on
Slang Records
You wouldn't think a group
- lamtri Pat LaityVBend wou
ld have a love ballad out. but
they do
The song is called Peaceful
Journey," and already is be
coming one of the area's most
oopular cuts.
The group will soon have an
ullmm to follow but I would
hold off for a while.

SOON TO COME...
A new album from the Isley
Brothers. It’s expected to be
here in Charlotte this week
end.
You’ve probably heard the
group’s latest single, “Take
Me To The Next Phase.’’ The
name of the album is SHOW
DOWN. Of course, on the
T-Neck label. Get used to
hearing it...it will be out for a
while.
Also coming here soon is
Heat Wave’s second LP...
They call this one CENTRAL
HEATING. It’s on Epic Re
cords... With the strongest cut
being “The Groove Line.”
That’s already out an a 45.
•JAZZ PICK OF THE WEEK...
Cal Tjader's.GUARBE...
on Fantasy Records. Tjader
has a style which has some
carryover from Lionel Hamp
ton’s xylophone...and yet the
re's some contemporary
sound as well.
Tjader has an excellent ver
sion of “This Masquerade" on
the album. Another strong cut
is "Black Orchid."
You’ll laugh...and laugh
some more after hearing Ri
chard Pryor's latest LP...THE
BLACKSMITH , on Laff Re
cords.
That label has issued 3
recent Pryor albums lately...
some of the material is not
new...but it's all funny.
There are parts of another
album that may make you
laugh, too. Even though the
l-P isn’t meant to be comedy.
The album is THE NIXON
INTERVIEWS WITH DAVID
KROST. It’s a four-record set
..with one whole album on
Watergate.
A good collector's item...but
right now. a bit expensive. The
set is selling for around 20
dollars. It's available on Poly
'tor Records.

UNCC Theatre Ensemble To
Present Havoc’s “Marathon 33”
Marathon dancing, together
with six-day bicycle races
and flagpole sitting, was a fad
spawned by the Great Depres
sion. The Theatre Ensemble
at the University of North'
Carolina at Charlotte will pre
sent June Havoc’s play, “Ma
rathon 33,” as its final produc
tion of the season April 13 -
April 22.
The play, an autobiograph
ical one by the noted actress
and author, is a story of the
people who were with Ms.
Havoc during to 3600 hours
that she danced in this mara
thon.
Marathon 33, which rep
laces ‘Comedy of Errors” as
the final play, is the choice of
guest directcr Charles Kerr.
Mr. Kerr comes to UNCC from
Indiana Repertory Theatre
where he directed ‘‘Vanities”
this past January. He is a
native Texan and graduate of
Texas Tech. He has been
associated with the prestig
ious Actors Theatre of Louis
ville, Kentucky for the past
seven years and is currently
advisor to several authors in
the New Dramatists' Play
wrights Unit.
This play is UNCC’s most
ambitious production to date.
It is a cooperative effort,
involving not only the Theatre
Ensemble, but also the Dance,
Music and Visual Arts areas.
