Summer Program for Min ority Journalist is sponsored annually by the School of Journalism at the University of California, Berkley. A sepa rate agency recruits hopefuls for the program each year from across the counrty. Mrs. Carter received notifi cation last week that she had been accepted as a participant, in this year’s effort. She will spend June 19 through Septe 1* un And Frolic Awaits You At McDowell Park It*s springtime at McDowell Park, and the paddle boats, ' picnic tables and campsites are ready and waiting far you! ' The County owned and oper ated park, located of N. C. 49, is open seven days a week, from dawn to dusk, and it’s free. The camping, picnick ing, hiking and fishing facilit ies are available all week, and you can rent a paddle boat on Saturdays and Sundays, 10 A. M. to 6:30 P. M., during April and May, for 50 cents per half hour. Starting in June, the paddle boats will be rented i seven days a week, j No swimming will be allow ed at McDowell Park during the 1978 summer season. Located on Lake Wylie, the 140-acre park has an entrance on N. C. 49 south of Charlotte. Its trails lead through hardwo od forests, down to the lake, where there are piers for Ashing and a sandy beach for sunning. Group picnic shelt ers rent for $5 for a half day -and *10 for a full day, and campsites are $2 for a tent site, |3 for a tent site with water and electricity, and $4 for a recreational vehicle site. She explained that her writing duties are mainly limited to the column, which she has worked on for two years. She had no formal training in joumlaism before being emp loyed at the newspaper. To get this opportunity, Mrs. Carter had to file an applicat ion in January. It included a 1,000 word autobiography, 1,000 word analysis of the .newspaper she reads most. i Of more than 1,000 applicat ions, said Mrs. Carter, 37 were semi-finalists. She was notifi ed in mid-March that she had been named a semi-finalist. That designation entiled her to travel to Washington from March 30 to April, for an interview, tests ami a demons tration of her writing ability. Since her current emp loyer fefused to sponsor her, she does not anticipate a job offer from them. “Since my husband is a musician, I want to try to get a place that would be good for him," she said.
