An annual Garmger’s Larry Brown Is “Athlete Of The Week” By Chase Vance PoetStaff Writer In this area, Garinger’s Larry Brown is primarily known for his efforts on the football field for the Wildcats of Coach James Holland. But during the spring, the Appalachain State University bound football grant-in-aid signed does not go into hibern ation. He plays baseball and Coach Joe Tomanchek says, he is one of the reasons the Wildcats are challenging West Mecklenburg's Indians for the pennant in the Southwestern 4-A Conference. Brown is a star second baseman who swings a heavy bat and is presently hitting well over .300. “Larry is one of our young Larry Brown ....Grainger Ace men who will really help us,” said Tomanchek. Brown believes his team is not as strong as they were last year but nevertheless expects his team to come out the winner. "We’ll have to jump on teams early if we want to win. We only have two starters returning from last year,” he added. Last year at second base, he hit.300 plus but only one ot his hits was a home run. He would like to change that statistic this year. "Last year, I went for the singles,” he said. “This year I will have to go for the extra bases-the doubles, triples and home runs because we will need all the runs we can get.” Brown is optimistic about the Wildcats' chances saying they will cause trouble for the rest of the league if they get a few breaks here and there. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Brown is a senior who lives with his parents in North Charlotte. At 5-9,165 pounds he will try out at halfback for the South em Conference affiliated Mou taineers. He hopes to be a historv major. Proper Service Will Keep Mower Running Lawn mowers may be me most neglected piece of equip ment used around the home, and that could be why the machines have a reputation for causing trouble. As the mowers are taken out of storage for the new season, a few simple maintenance jobs could extend the life of your mower and keep your machine purring along all summer. North Carolina State Univ ersity agricultural extension engineers suggest that one of the most overlooked and imp portant lawn mower mainten ance chores is simply chang t ing the oil. Most mowers don't have oil filters as do automobiles. The oil collects a lot of impurities 'and loses much of its lubricat ing qualities with long use. If you don’t believe it, drain it from you mower and see how black it is - nothing like the color of the fresh oil you pour from the can. On most mowers, the oil can be drained by removing a plug from underneath the mower. Be sure to replace it securely when the oil is drained, but don’t overdo it and crack the motor housing. The air cleaner need frequ ent cleaning. On many mow lal that can be washed in a little gasoline to remove the impurities. Be very cautious of sparks or flames when handling gas or flamable solv ents. The crankcase breather will also need to be cleaned or replaced. This element allows vapors to get out of the crank case. - Does your mower blade need sharpening? This may not be a job you want to attempt Blade balance is imp ortant and a little too much grinding on one end can create imbalance. This can cause the mower to vibrate wildly when in use and result in a ruined To Win Own Track Meet Golden Bulls F avored The Johnson C.
