This feature points out how well women have excelled in the textile arts of weaving, knitting, spinning, making fabrics and clothes. The prominent image of the handicraft arts in today’s wor ld tie in with the ever growing concern with natural materi als like wood, clay, pulp and fabrics. Gyongy Laky, direct or of Fiberworks which is a textile arts center in Berkeley, California, says that by plac ing together a schoolroom environment with work rooms and a gallery, the growth of Fiberworks has progressed from a small salon type gath ering of artist to a major community arts center within a five year span “Textile arts are a rich area for contemporary artists who can create their own work out of the history and tradition of 500 to 1,000 years ago,” says Laky. The extinction of these creative skills is why Fiber : works now offer classes in ethnic embroidery, ornament al braiding, rope-making, chu rch vestments, Chinese and Japanese costumes, Seminole patchwork, Bolivian weaving and Coptic tapestries. Host Gerri Lange will intro duce “Claysong,” a film show ing how a potter named Diana Bohn creates a lovely finished piece from a lump of wet clay. !
