The results left Herman TVxnas’s speedy crew with 12 victories in 13 starts in the Jackie Robinson Semi-Pro Baseball League this summer. Alphonso “Shot" Clawson outpitcbed Marcus Rivens Saturday afternoon at Hard ing High School’s athletic field - to pick up his first win since Joining the Rangers three weeks ago. Each hurler gave up seven hits and each team committed two errors. However, the Rangers pro duced three runs nff a hit hv Lafeayette Currence, a walk, hit by pitch ball, an error and a fielder’s choice to put the triumph out of reach. Babe Ruth League Gets New Season Underway The West Charlotte Babe Ruth League got its new season underway last week. As expected the action w»« furious and unsuspected. For example the Westside Yan-' kees won two contests while the McCrorey YMCA Dodgers were losing two. The Lincoln Heights Reds won one and lost one while the Westside Ran gers and the Charlotte Bums were each losing one game. The teams play on Mondays and Fridays. This , week’s schedule has West Charlotte playing the Westside Rangers and Lincoln Heights hosting McCrorey YMCA Friday afternoon Monday afternoon will find the Westside Rangers at Mc Crorey YMCA and Revolution Park at West Charlotte. fhe fight will be the main event of a prime time TV triple-header from Caesars Palace in Las Vegas that will also feature an important heavyweight fight spotlighting Jimmy Young, the number one ranked contender by both the ABC and WBA, against unbeaten Osvaldo “Ossie” Ocasio, and a 15-round World Bantamweight Championship fight in which Carlos Zarete, the most feared puncher in boxing today, will put his title on line against highly rated Yungshik-Kim. Ken Norton gained recogni tion as Heavyweight Champ ion from the World Boxing Council in March of this year after the WBC stripped the crown from Leon Spinks for refusing to make his first title defense against Norton, the top contender. Prior to taking the title from Muhammad Ali, Spinks allegedly had agreed to make his initial defense, if he won the crown, against Nor ton, but apparently reneged. The WBC thfen gave its recog nition to Norton, based on his November 5, 1977, decision over Jimmy Young. Norton has impressive ring credentials. The former Mar ine has a 40-4 record, with 32 knockout victories. In addi tion to his victory over Young, he holds wins over Muham mad Ali, Jerry Quarry and Duane Bobick. Bom in Jack sonville, Illinois, on August 9, 1945, the 32-vear-old Norton is 6’3” and weighs about 217 pounds. Jimmy Young, who’ll fight on the same card in his quest for another tiUe shot, shocked the world on April 30, 1976, by fighting champion Muluun mad Ali on even terms for 15 rounds, only to lose a narrow and highly controversial deci sion. He went on to defeat Ron Lyle and then scored a major upset by beating former heavyweight Champion George Foreman. Now the number one contender, the 28-year-old Young has had 30 fights. His record is 22-6-2. Known primarily as a clever, crafty boxer, he has seven knockouts to his credit. His opponent, Osvaldo "Os sie” Ocasio, hails from San Juan, Puerto Rico. Ocasio is 20 years old, and is unbeaten, with a 12-0 record. Ten of his wins have been by knockouts, and Young will be by far his most difficult test to date Dodgers Upset Mecklenburg Orioles, 12-4 The Union County Dodgers has become the first team to defeat the Mecklenburg Orio les in Jackie Robinson Semi Pro Baseball League competi tion. “We jumped on them from the beginning," stated an overjoyed Clarence Also brook, general manager of the team that plays out of Monroe. “I told my players that we should play them as just a nother ball club and not think of their reputation for having played in organized ball,” Alsobrook explained. Aided by a six-run outburst in the third frame, the Dod gers romped to a 12-4 victory behind the steady pitching of Louis Davidson, who notched his fourth triumph in seven decision. Davidson walked two and fanned four. Manager Minnie Mendoze, who had three hits, was the only Oriole to cause Davidson any torubl trouble "We just couldn't get him (Mendoza) out," smiled Alsobrook The Dodgers raked two Ori ole hurlers for 16 base hits. BIG JOHN HARRIS ...Bums’ designated hitter . n -n -_ Royal Bums9 Star Harris Believes Designated Hitter Is Important Position By Chase Vance Post Staff Writer The designated hitter posi tion is relatively new to the game of baseball, but Royal Bum’s John Harris believes that it is a very important position. j “I think it is one of the most - important positions on the ; team,” Harris said. “When you go up to the bat, you know J you have to come through with runs. If somebody is on base, you have to bring them in. If you have nobody on, you have to get a run." Harris was honored recently by being named as an all-star for the East in the Jackie Robinson League’s East-West All-Star game. Whether or not he goes for the long ball when he comes up to bat depends, he said, on the score. “If you have runners on and are not far behind you go for the single,” he said. “But if the score is close and you need a long ball, you swing for it.” Over the years he has played with his friends on the Hickory Grove Sluggers, the ' Charlotte Tides, the Charlotte Hawks, the Gunn Colts, and the Long Creek Sluggers. The designated hitter for the Bums, said he enjoys the team because he has several friends on the team including coach Willie Barringer and manager Johnny Foster. In that all-star game the Sluggers, he was one for three, driving in two runs with a double. He has five home runs in this young season and pre dicts that his team will be better in the second half of the season. "Eight teams will make the playoffs,” said Harris, “And we intend to be one of those teams.” We have had a lot ol close games and should be much better in the second half. "When he is not playing with the Bums or driving his rig up the highways during the week ends, he plays golf. "I feel like I am as good as any golfer around," he said, adding that his foursomes usually include Bill Johnson, Robert Morris, Bob Johnson, or Herman Thomas. Harris likes to play all the courses in the area but admits that Crystal Springs near Pineville is the hardest but is his favorite. “I love it. I wish 1 had time to follow golf. 1 believe I could have made the tour," said Harris. He has been called the best weekend golfer in the city. Harris lives in Cantebury Woods with his wife Vivian and his 14 year old daughter.
